The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

Between 1955-1960, Donald W. Lynch of the US Forest Service and faimly lived at 2868 Parke Circle Dr. in Boise, Idaho. Sometime during that epoch young David Lynch was out in the front yard playing when a naked woman wandered down the street towards their house. This moment, when our David realized the world was quite different than what he thought it was, and to no small degree made him the artist he later became, took place just 200 feet from the Cassia Street house in which I grew up and I think some of those radioactive weirdness particles remained and made me who I am too.

I mentioned on Pseu's playlist that I had "Surveilance" on DVD, EP'ed by Lynch, directed by her daughter Jennifer, and starring Bill Pullman (whom, as you know, also starred in "Lost Highway"). The movie also has French Stewart as a police officer, whom I didn't recognize at first until the second time he appeared on-screen.

OMG this track still creeps me the fuck out. I was in high school when Twin Peaks came out and it was a huge part of my relationship with my friends at the time. I was also mentally trying to escape the suburbs, and make sense of it all -- the evil that lurked beneath the scrim of "normal." So, Twin Peaks was perfect.

I'm sure a good number of you out there have seen those St. Jude spots
that run on TV on occasion. There's a particular one that runs to infomercial length. One of it's spokesperson "poster boys" was a dusty blonde fellow who appeared to be an adult. Every time I see him, I couldn't help thinking I'd seen him somewhere before.
Well, only until recently did it finally occur to me. Remember the tap-dancing midget that shows up occasionally in the Red Room scenes (like in the header photo above)? Yes...IT'S THE SAME GUY! So now I'm left asking myself "Why didn't it occur to me sooner? I should've spotted the resemblance right away!".

When I was a teen, it seemed impossible to see this movie, and to make matters worse, I had this great book about cult films called For One Week Only, and the author had a super detailed, exhaustive plot 'synopsis' for each movie, leaving nothing to your imagination.
But I still was not prepared for when I actually saw it.

It was Christmas when I found it, and my siblings and parent wanted to watch it because I was so over the moon at having found it. Everyone was disturbed and disgusted, but couldn't stop watching it. I first saw EH when I was in my early 20s. I made sure to tell friends about it and was excited to see their reactions. I found parts so incredibly funny ( like the meeting of Mary’s weird family) and the crazy dark juxtaposition with the atmospherics and the baby. What was used to make it? Also the soundtrack which I learned featured some low mixed and reverbed Fats Waller instrumentals. It took me 25 years after seeing the film to finally discover his instrumental organ pieces, thiugh I already had volumes of Walller works. EH was a gift that kept on giving. A major influence in my life.

A Lynch note just 'fore I drop into bed. I looked this up because it always stuck with me regarding his response to the world. He lived in Philly at some point when he was younger ("It’s the sickest, most corrupt, decaying, fear-ridden city imaginable") and he lived across from a morgue, where the body bags gained his special attention.

“The bags had a big zipper, and they’d open the zipper and shoot water into the bags with big hoses. With the zipper open and the bags sagging on the pegs, it looked like these big smiles. I called them the smiling bags of death.”

Aaaaand good night.

When I truly developed a deep appreciation for Lynch (pre-TP:TR), it dawned on me how Lynch managed to tap into the most disturbing facets of human nature: idiosyncracies and contrary habits linked to personally traumatic events, skeletons in the closet, the "cloud of unknowing", the uncertainty of what current events will portend for the future, and the dark, hostile intentions of those who continually strive to attain and maintain power or the illusion thereof. Lynch leaves no stone unturned. He digs deep and uncovers what we presumably shouldn't be seeing, in each of us and in each other.
