I like some George Strait, but man, I heard those songs so so many more times than I needed to hear them in the 80s and 90s. If you start singing "Oceanfront Property" around me, I'm not responsible for what happens after.

Karl:

Three key periods for George Jones: his early country rock period (my personal favorite), followed by the Tammy Wynette duets period (also great), and then "written-off as No Show Jones" period. That last period has some amazing gems, even up to pretty late in his life. "Choices" was a really great late Jones song.

His version of "I Gotta Get Drunk" is one of the best country songs ever recorded, and it didn't even make the top two you asked for.

I was surprised by how hard losing him hit me -- and seemed to hit so many others. I think for me at least it also partly exemplifies the enshittification of everything, the lack of control we have over it, and how the world as currently constituted is a big fuck-you to people who, you know, care about things. Lynch was killed by a combo of two of the biggest, shittiest forces in capitalism, tobacco and oil, because we can't have nice things, and just in case we fool ourselves for a while in the dark of the theater into believing we can, they will take it away, and we're left here, not seeing.

??:

Mystery and detectives and cinema relate one hundred percent to life. Most of us, we don’t know where we were before we were born. We don’t know for sure where we’re going after. We don’t know why we’re here. We don’t know much about anything. We’re floating on a ball in something they call a universe on the edge of a galaxy with about 100 or 200 billion suns… And we are going to football games and watching TV. It’s like pretty crazy. That’s the way it is.
