Lover of sound, I suppose. (And just wow! The word "audio," which strikes me as ancient Latin, emerged in the 20thC, and it relates to sound reproduction gear. I had no idea.)

I say everybody is an audiophile, because we're all capable of appreciating, more or less, reproductions of performances in terms of how "natural" (begs the question) they sound. The narrower take on "audiophile" has to do with "fidelity" to the original performance, which is of course irrecoverable. But I know that anybody who bothers to compare, say, this turntable with that one, will discern a difference, or perhaps will not! Doesn't matter.

I have always taken it to refer to persons who have a higher ability to discern sound (eg people who can tell digital from analog sound). Like a supertaster. Having some tasting training and seeing the benefits of being cued on learning to perceive I look forward to commentary here. "Did you hear that" sort of comments, trying to increase my sensitivity.
  9:03pm
Dean:

"Audio" is new, but consider "audience," for which we find in OED this etymological association:

Anglo-Norman and Middle French audience (French audience) range or sphere of hearing (second half of the 12th cent. in Old French, earliest in en audience audibly; obsolete after the early 18th cent.), formal interview or hearing (a1280 or earlier; end of the 13th cent. or earlier in specific sense ‘judicial hearing’), attention (1309), opportunity to be heard at a formal interview (1316), lecture (1372 in an apparently isolated attestation), room where formal hearings are held, courtroom (1452; obsolete after the Middle French period)...
  9:05pm
Bryan the Interloper:

fascinating for us etymology nerds, Dean!
  9:11pm
Listener Gregory:

Mono refers to one speaker, but stereo actually means, not two, but “solid,” or 3-dimensional. In vision research, “stereo” refers to seeing all three dimensions (and depth in particular).
News you can use!
  9:11pm
Dean:

@Alex from Media: I know of whom you speak, the so-called Golden Ears experts, who ran and continue to run a good scam, leveraging to their advantage the reasonable epistemological uncertainty that is common to human cognition.

My crude example: I recently visited a stereo gear supplier in Orange County, CA. Had a great time, bought some killer records. Of particular interest to me, though, was the fact that the store peddles a pair of amplifiers with a $0.3M price tag. Ordinarily, I would want to hear such gear, but in fact I have never been a fan of this particular manufacturer's gear.

Thus, if you offered me a free pair of those amplifiers, I might or might not accept them, because frankly, the amps I want run a mere $90K/pair.

@dean, I read recently that Tom Brady wears a $700,000 watch. What??? (Also see our Homeland Security Secy’s gold Rolex.)
Amplifiers of that cost are not purchased because of the sound, any more than those watches are bought because of how well they tell time.

@LG: Absolutely yes. στερεός = solid. This is marvelous, because over the years I have played records on more or less decent systems and the effect has been stunning. "OMG, Hamza El Din is performing in my fucking living room!"

I must disagree about commodities "of that cost." Quite often, but not always, they offer improvement. This works for stereo gear, not so much for clocks, unless like me you calibrate your digital calendar to attoseconds. I need pinpoint precision.

Gary, great show tonight… and I actually mean it this time. However, I have to go now, so you can slack off if you like. Thanks as always!

hey sorry, back home now after listening along in the car! မိုနို is the burmese spelling for "mono" if you wanna search out youtube playlists or the like.. also i think it's called "mono" because it's the (only) music played on national radio, whereas "stereo" was the underground subversive rock-type stuff you'd have to play on your personal stereo.. i think both terms are a bit dated now, however

This is convenient. NYT today(?) reports on the discovery of a Beatles demo heretofore unknown.

"Right away, we’re all kind of looking at each other," Frith said. 'It seems like the Beatles are in the room. That’s how clear it is."

And: "'The fidelity is astounding,' Hennessey said."

We are all audiophiles.
