heavy rotation on wfmu to me means ~6 times over a few weeks; or >10 times in it's entire history.
..by contrast many radio stations play a song 5-6X/day for weeks or months; and classic rock stations might play the same song around the same time every day for... months? years? (a song that's already been played thousands of times over the years)
there there's fodder for the masses, while we have a smörgåsbord.

I haven't researched it, but given their general ethos, i doubt it. Money = cohesion, so accepting money to do art isn't all that different from accepting money to have sex. In an ideal world we would want people to be free to express themselves without cohesion.

I can't remember how the letter was signed, I wonder if I still have that letter somewhere in a box....BTW Yes, "Animals" was the last Pink Floyd album I could stomach. "Animals" was a real great gateway album for me as a sophomore in high school, 1977, to get into much more difficult listening material over the next few years on real underground WFMU type radio. When the Wall came out with all the hype I was thoroughly disappointed.

i did, didn't i.
but it's not my fault! i once asked a person's ancestral background; she said "i'm jewish". i said that's a religion - and she went into the explanation that has never left me, yet still i regard as a bit of a scapegoat.

New records back in 1977 were probably around 5 or 6 bucks for a single domestic LP, so not too expensive. It sure would have been great to hear WFMU in 1977! I was living in the Baltimore-Wash.,DC area then and we had Georgetown's WGTB which I assume was playing the same records as WFMU, they were shut down in 1979, but before they were shut down I was turned onto the Residents, Chrome, 1/2 Japanese, all the great German Electronic music and albums like "Animals" were my gateway to the underground...

Well,I am sure enjoying this ride through recent history. That will be great when you do the 1977 Concept show. You'll have to read the DJ comments on the WFMU albums from that year if they still exist.

it was around 15. (1979).
they probably jacked it up because of all the hype. pink floyd was huge.
(they did that with the beatles "white album" in 1968 too. more than other double albums.)
...a good chunk of change for a teenager to spend on his little brother that he rarely got along with - in a "lower middle class" family.

you're lucky you had that station. i discovered wfmu in '77, but didn't fully immerse until 1980.
but we did have, for a short time, wpix-fm. a renegade commercial station that played punk, new wave, 60s punk and psych...
then one morning i turned it on, and it was "love songs. nothing, but love songs".

You're very lucky to have been able to listen to WFMU for such a long time. The Gerogetown Station mentioned that there was a great station in NJ near NYC so they were talking about WFMU, then once i was in college radio in 1981 I heard about WFMU, first got to listen to WFMU on a NYC Trip in Oct. 1984.

I’m not sure if it’s a purely local to Minneapolis thing. That’s a great experience to hang with the Huskers! Zen Arcade and New Day Rising rocked my world in the mid 80’s. Totally Wired me for all sorts of tangents. Including the Fall.

i just got lucky. i was very into the first eps - everything falls apart and metal circus. one day a friend says lets go see hüsker dü at city gardens. i didn't even know he liked them, then it turns out he knew them!
