Whoa, thanks for speaking about this and well tempered vs even tempered. On my Gibson Les Pauls, I have to tune the B string a bit sharp so that a G chord is in tune at the 15th fret.

Learning guitar as a teen, I just *knew* something was off with our modern tuning system. Of all the strings, the G was always the hardest to tune for me: if it was in tune in C (which has an open G), it'd be out of tune when playing a D (G fretted on second fret), clashing with the open D string. I thought I was just really bad at tuning. Thankfully I learned about 12-TET and its deficiencies along the way.

Yes, I've been without devices; I'm using Helene's laptop right now....traveling with her 85-ish year old mom...stayed at her 95 year old sister's place in Munich...dream trip, beyond my means....other than the family logistics (it's ok really) and my terrible German language skills...just got here to Prague, and it's more breathtaking, chresti, than I ever imagined...this music is perfect...it always was

At the risk of sounding all sorts of corny, I love this collective space; two beloved hosts spinning the gems and imparting their wisdom, and listeners who add so much with wisdom and experiences of their own. This program is truly a welcome refuge from the worldwide angst.

Okay, sappiness complete.

I once heard someone absolutely butcher this piece at a venue known for presenting some top talent (the late, great WMP Music Hall). Sounded like the strings were still in the cat, as they say. I was embarrassed too because I'd been talking up the venue to a friend of mine working on his PhD in musicology, and that was the concert I took him to.

If I were Ken, this would be my favorite show. Because either they are two professional musicians who are so stoned they can barely function, which would pluck Ken's heart strings like the most seasoned harpist, or they are stone cold sober and this is their natural mode in which case this is just goddamn good radio.

Acid Rich:

guys thank you so much for this show. as you're probably aware, it's difficult to find classical listeners in the wild, and you make me feel much less alone, hearing you comment on some of my favorite music. I've played the first movement of this piece on violin, both solo parts, several times in my youth, but never the 2nd movement, which is just sublime and so nice to hear and anticipate your commentary on it.
  7:47pm
Acid Rich:

also while i'm here and commenting, my mom vaguely knows your violist guest from a couple of months ago - she played in NJSO. she and i have been playing bwv 1060r together whenever she visits. it's tough but rewarding. i was stumped at a part in the first movement and was literally cursing bach until i realized that it had to be played with open E string for the notes that were stumping me.
  7:50pm
Acid Rich:

and not only is your show itself heartening as a lonely classical fan, as a decades-long wfmu listener, the interest and acclaim from your fellow DJs is exponentially gratifying

It all makes sense now Carol; easy to see how your hearing Bach at a young age got the whole thing started for you.

It would be equally interesting to hear how Cullan arrived at his love of classical; the unanswered $64,000 question.

[Thanks for the terrific show Carol and Cullan!]
[Best wishes for a super week ahead to one and all!]
