The Broom Of The System | (excerpt) | The Broom Of The System - a novel by David Foster Wallace | reading (with dramatic musical accompaniment) of pages 118 - 128 from "The Broom Of The System," a novel by David Foster Wallace (first pub. 1997) - which include a story about a man with an anger problem, a woman with a junk food and narcoleptic problem, the couple's two children who are each born with a strange neurological disorder where they have life-threatening epileptic fits whenever they cry, a sleazy, city-hating psychiatrist who sold the couple their secluded cabin deep in the woods, the tiny, far-off backwoods hospital, and one dark and stormy night |

Very long ranting part of the show where I talk about a night out on the town during which I had a delicious sushi meal, compare it to a night out a few days earlier where I had an explosive (literally) night renting movies at Kim's on St. Mark's, and then reminisce and tell a long childhood story about me and my friend Curtis who skipped school in the eighth grade and rode our bikes a zillion miles in the hot Texas sun, wearing trash bags and colored hair spray, all the way to a movie theater in Dallas - just to see the film "Starstruck."
Starstruck | (film clips) | Angus convinces Jackie to tightrope over a busy intersection in Sydney as a publicity stunt, Jackie performs "Temper, Temper" at the Lizard Lounge and wins the crowd over, Jackie Mullens and the Wombats infiltrate the final "Wow!" talent competition at Sydney Opera House, with Jackie dangling in limbo from a descending stage prop as the crowd and crew jeer her - but of course they end up winning the crowd over, inexplicably nabbing the grand prize and saving the farm (pub), performing "It's The Monkey In Me." Starstruck, dir: Gillian Armstrong, 1982. Cast: Jo Kennedy, Ross O'Donovan, Max Cullen, Pat Evison, John O'May, Phil Judd. Apartment Zero | (film clips) | Insular, film-obsessed Adrian has a discussion with his dashing new roommate Jack about movie trivia, warns him about not talking to the neighbors, they have more movie trivia, Adrian squirms as they talk about girls, Adrian gushes about Jack to his mother, and the two end in a typical Odd Couple-esque roommate situation. Dir: Martin Donovan, 1988. Cast: Colin Firth, Hart Bochner. More info on this film here and here.
Windy & Carl | track 1 | Deadicated To Flea | played mostly under above movie clips |
Mike Love | live, between-song banter | Shut Up and Play! Vol. II | Mike Love goes a little too ga ga over President Bill Clinton's revelation that he tried pot, from an early 90's Beach Boys show. "Shut Up and Play! Vol II" is Brian Turner's 2005 WFMU DJ premium - his second excellent hand-picked collection of between-song banter, radio flubs and rediculous live moments from music stars and "stars," past and present, in front of horrified, jeering (and sometimes rioting) audiences. |
Bermuda Triangle | Nights In White Satin | Bermuda Triangle | This home-made record, circa 1970's, was discovered by a DJ at the station - it's from a hippie trio from CA who do mostly oddly beautiful cover versions of other songs, in this cade a Moody Blues cover |
Dorsey & Beatrice Dixon | Shining City Over the River | Prayers From Hell | collection of old-time gospel mountain music |
