Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Favoriting March 31, 2011: Andy Warhol Statue Unveiling Show

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments Approx. start time

Initial Panic
  Already sensing minor chipmunking.

Your spot.

An Interview with Rodney at 17th and Broadway, site of the Warhol Statue.
Note: When I initially saw the statue, it was maybe 3pm-ish and it was uncovered. Tourists were gawking, technicians were primping it, glossing it's shoes. Then, after a time, it was covered with silver cloth and I was told there would be a later unveiling. I decided to stick around for the ceremony, thus necessitating a need to loiter and collect interview material. This wasn't a show I had planned on doing. I happened upon it, as so often ... happens. Anyway, this is why some of the early interview subjects allude to being able to see the statue, even though later in the episode, it is covered and people (who haven't seen it) were waiting for it to be uncovered.

Random

Screwing with the battery.

Ka-Boom ... Big Boom!

Smashed Leg

A Short Interview with Jennifer
Note to listeners: Many of these interviews were MUCH longer. I just did so many that I had to cut them way down. I apologize for that. Certainly didn't mean to waste anyone's time. Perhaps I'll use the extra footage in a future episode.

An interview with Phillip Bel Paso

Who was Andy?

Gravitons!

Peaked-Out
Noticing a disturbing lack of treble lately. Might need a new micro-cassette.

Abu's Duncan Consumption Patterns

An interview with David the architect from Birmingham, Ala. - Union Square Park
I feel particularly bad about shortening David's interview. We talked at length and then it was brutally shortened in editing, certainly not because David wasn't interesting. He was. Again ... additional footage may appear in a future Dusty. Sorry, David, and all the best.

Featured music behind David ... Alabama, There's A World, Heart of Gold, Old Man (Excerpts) ... all from the Neil Young "Harvest" LP ... but you knew this.

Leaving Alabama

Rediscovering Alabama

David's honest assessment of Warhol

Interview with unknown man, railing on a street corner near Union Square Park.
I had some qualms about airing this. Was he sane? He was bellering all this out at full volume on a public sidewalk, in full earshot of passers-by. As some listeners have already mentioned, despite his inflammatory diatribe, he's kind of humorous in an obtuse way. You can even hear him laugh at himself a couple of times. He kind of sounds like Jerry Stiller to me. For the record, The Dusty Show loves womankind and promotes their equality, well-being and happiness. I also dig God and Jesus. Did I give in to sensationalism? Maybe.

An interview with Mark Birnbaum - http://www.ragtimemarkbirnbaum.com/

Mark on Warhol
I did a long interview with Mark, too. Great guy.
At this point, my editing job is getting rushed, as I was running out of time. I was letting edits pass that I wouldn't ordinarily.

An interview with Peter Brant - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_M._Brant
Each person I encountered at this event was cordial and open to being interviewed, which is not always the case.
I did experience some stammering and mental cloudiness in interviewing the 'celebrities.' Star-struck, I guess.

An interview with Warhol Statue sculptor, Rob Pruitt -- http://www.interviewmagazine.com/art/rob-pruitt/
That's it for another episode of The Dusty Show. Enjoyed visiting with you on the Accuplaylist. Not sure if I'll continue doing it. Reveals to much of my pedestrian knowledge. No mystery. Too available. Ha!

As I said, I wish I had had the time to edit this more carefully. There were so many worthy interview subjects (everyone is, but you know what I mean) that deserved better representation. I did my best with the time constraints.

Thanks again for listening. Let me know what you think of the program. I'm always open to input and thoughts and I value your minds and insights. Cold here in Manhattan tonight. Snow possible, and it's April. I wish I could ski, but that head-banging I did in Switzerland precludes those notions and sidelines me, sadly. Maybe next year ... or not. Must protect noggin. Take care everyone and ... always remember.

  6:22pm

Clay, will you describe the statue for us out-of-staters? Is it a conventional, representational sort of statue?
  6:22pm
Vicki:

  6:23pm
Vicki:

HA HA!!!
  6:23pm

Adam in Lynnwood:

Was this fella in "Salesman" by the Maysles?
  6:23pm

Vicki:

I'd not want to be a million miles from him but he's making me laugh

Vicki:

oh I like the statue!
  6:30pm
dale:

hello clay. i would think a chrome statue of ANYONE would be reserved for jeff koons, but what do i know. i'd be afraid to have your first interviewee work on my car. KERBLOOIE!
i saw andy only once, taking pics of club goers at a place on west side and jane street. kind of a non-event. i was andy at last halloween party i went to.
  6:31pm
dale:

opening scene of dracula with udo kier putting on his makeup is STUNNING.
  6:31pm
Anthony:

Chrome statue = referencing the foil-clad Factory, and the silver balloons. Bah to Koons!
  6:32pm
coelacanth:

Wow that's intense. I want to see it right after a rain when the bright sun shines directly down on it.
  6:32pm
Anthony:

Koons already has that statue of him in coitus with his ex-wife, somewhere.
  6:33pm
clay:

i'd have loved to have seen andy warhol. i love that kind of pop celebrity artist thing. was koons the guy who did the chrome rabbit? I confuse him with Dean Koontz.
  6:34pm
Vicki:

Kenny said he met Andy once and lurched forward with his hand and Andy cowered away
  6:35pm
coelacanth:

  6:37pm
clay:

I love Shiloh.
  6:38pm
Anthony:

Oh its a Rob Pruitt! I saw him lecture once. Rad dude.
  6:38pm
dale:

80s nyc was sooooooo much better. an original music scene, you didn't need to be rich to buy a beer, skinheads and punks and trannys and bridge and tunnel kids and kids from small rural towns all hanging out together...fun and gritty. find 'songs for drella' clay when you can. lou read and john cale - nice
  6:39pm
clay:

dale from north dakota? hey my friend.
  6:40pm
adamp:

great show, clay!
  6:40pm
clay:

thanks, ad!
  6:41pm
dale:

no, dale from upstate (from dale and kyle, who is my wife and i am her husband). haven't emailed in many a moon. i can pretend to be from north dakota, though
  6:41pm
Ike:

80s NYC sounds so fascinating now, but maybe over-nostalgified. Actually going back there in a time machine might be scary -- lots of crime, robbery, drug addicts, heroin causing so many problems (as my aunt well knew when she lived in the Village back then)....
  6:42pm
clay:

dale! hello.
  6:42pm
Vicki:

I think the best statue of Andy would float above NYC like his silver balloons
  6:43pm
clay:

Mylar forever!
  6:44pm
dale:

perhaps a macy's parade balloon in silver mylar, vicki?
  6:44pm
Anthony:

Good call! Pruitt should do Warhol float for the Macy's Thanksgiving parade.
  6:45pm
Vicki:

I LOVE his interviews
he's beautiful
  6:45pm
Anthony:

Oh, Dale beat me to it. Awesome show, Clay.
  6:46pm
Vicki:

Agreed on the float!
  6:46pm
clay:

thanks ant!
  6:46pm

  6:46pm
clay:

Thanks Vicki.
  6:47pm
clay:

sorry hamburger. felt bad about that.
  6:48pm
dale:

what is he carrying - a macy's big brown bag? the statue kinda looks like mark twain.
  6:49pm
Pantagruel:

"..in his right hand he holds a Bloomingdale’s shopping bag, in which he usually carried copies of Interview, the celebrity magazine he founded in 1969."
  6:49pm
Vicki:

Andy's films were so ahead of their time - the way he showed that time doesn't have to be canned, edited and all full of action, that reality is great to watch on the screen too. And Empire/Sleep are really profound, the idea that you don't even have to watch the whole thing
  6:49pm
Anthony:

big brown bag is bloomingdales!
  6:50pm
dale:

d'oh, bloomies of course!
  6:50pm
Vicki:

wow... great getting all these people on mic
  6:51pm
clay:

i was intimidated a bit.
  6:52pm
Vicki:

sometimes it's good not to know, eh
  6:55pm
Anthony:

Clay, did you get a chance to interview the sculptor?
  6:56pm
clay:

he's on now ant
  6:56pm
Vicki:

hey - see you in a few weeks, Clay
  6:56pm
Anthony:

Oh here it is!
  6:57pm
clay:

k vick. hi to peter.
  6:57pm
Vicki:

he says hi
  6:58pm
Pantagruel:

Good job, Clay!
  6:58pm
Vicki:

that was a great show, thanks
  6:58pm
