I'm no fan of the Disney-fied Times Sq. but I'm always mystified when people reminisce about "the scum, the ¢#ñts, the dogs, the filth, the shit" as it were. I don't want to hang around there either. 8th Ave. in the mid-to-upper 30s still has some of that flavor and it's very lame & creepy, and squicks me out.

HoJo was a big-ass national chain that no doubt was a contributing factor in the closing of a great many small businesses (motels and restaurants).
