@ Cecile : thx, i can't right now, but i'll pledge tonight (in France) and some more during the week. :)

@ Julie : i've heard your french, it's good, don't feel humiliated. It was just my small attempt to push the idea that as WFMU is an international radio, every's concerned about the WFMUTHON2012 !

I would think that the Canines Festival would be a more prestigious award for a dog though :D
  12:46pm
derp derp:

(just curious how the Best Show got such an insanely high number of pledges, compared to other shows.. does Tom have a much larger fan base than other shows, or does he have more celebrity/well off friends donating to his show? or both? It's not in my time zone so I don't get a chance to hear many of his shows...)
  12:47pm
Danne D:

Julie appealing to the anti-social crowd with that pitch for web pledges :) "you don't have to talk to anybody"
  12:48pm
Cecile:

All of the above, and Scharpling is a ridiculously good networker as well. Scharpling and Wurster are Twitter monsters - their feeds are funny even if you don't listen to the shows.
  12:49pm
Cecile:

Danne, I think a palm d'or made out of pigskin would be the most prestigious award for a dog. Or bacon.

  12:54pm
steven, down on the farm:

Mice of the day prefer beef jerky as bait
  12:54pm
Danne D:

@Cecile 100% agree - plus, Tom got deep roots in the station as he's been on the station for so long - so he has both a strong FMU audience as well as a strong external audience. It's built momentum over the years and he really has been tireless in advocating for the station. And he's really a good guy.

Wilson - I think that's a strong hint.

  12:58pm
Van in DC:

This was another wonderful live set from before.
  12:58pm
Caryn:

The first time I listened and pledged during a WFMU marathon, it was because a person I was a fan of was on Scharpling's show, so I can testify first-hand that many new people donate to that show, because someone they follow on Twitter or FB or wherever tell them to check the show out. Hopefully, many of those people will stick around and become regular listeners and pledgers like me. Never listen to Scharpling nowadays, because it's on at 4 a.m. my time. I'm seldom up then.

@van - Hi
  1:31pm

would that copy editor be named KP? ;)

I humbly beg for more people to pony up a pledge and support my treasured adopted Irene. :)

I also know a copy editor. He is my husband Peter Keepnews. He has to keep a close watch on my typos.

Great article on Peter yesterday. Nice to know there are hard working, conscientious people in the business. Of course they are not in sports.

Si. I mean oui.
  1:34pm

well, Irene, I made few typos until autofill came around. Now I have to disable it right away or it's just weird.
  1:35pm
BSI:

Married to a copy editor: you too? Solidarity!
Being a graphic designer, it's kind of like covering both hemispheres of the brain in one household. An un-natural kind of stability.
  1:35pm
Cecile:

Even to Pledge is to Fail.
And thanks to Fabio, everyone wants to fail.
  1:35pm
Van in DC:

If you pledge, then Even to Fail (to win prize) is to Win (by helping keep WFMU on the air)
  1:36pm
Cecile:

do you have any Claire and the Reasons?

BSI - ha! I think I'm going back to school for graphic design...
  1:37pm
Cecile:

I bought and named a comment board.
  1:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Van Couldn't have said it better myself! (Actually I was planning on typing that similar message...)

@Julie I think the $180 level is referred to as a "Half Mouse"--at least that's what some have called it on the Air. It may not have a proper name (Half Mouse is good, or maybe "Half Circle")
  1:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

Pearl Harbor is just a section of greater Honolulu, island of Oahu.
  1:38pm
Cecile:

It's a heavy place.
The memorial is so quiet. I'm not a spiritual person, but you feel something old and deep in your brain around there.
  1:40pm
Cecile:

But we only visited the memorial
  1:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

Send your cosmic hugs (and dough!) to Irene!

@Cecile: I've never been, I heard the memorial is very heavy. A bay, much of which is a designated War Grave. Comments boards are great though--which board did you adopt?
  1:43pm
Van in DC:

Might the hauntingly beautiful vocal chords of Liz Fraser be possibly played today?
  1:44pm
Cecile:

I saw him once. It wasn't great because he had double pnuemonia. It was the '82 tour. I was bummed. I heard later dates were just electrifying.

Yep, Peter, he did do that at the show we saw. We were new jazz fans and were all "what the hell?"

I adopted Jason Sigal's talk is cheap board. It's called Free Speech.
  1:45pm
Mike East:

Just got word that I have successfully adopted the hexagonal trash bin!!!! (Does this mean it my responsibility to empty it now?)
  1:45pm
KP:

Julie is adopted.
  1:45pm
Caryn:

I believe the $180 pledge is called the "Global Domination" pledge, due to the name of the tote you get then. I mean Verboten Toten.
  1:47pm
Van in DC:

Actually the music today has put me in the mood more for something like Newgrange from Clannad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
Irene:

Well, Mike, I wouldn't hold you to it. But that bin does get pretty full from time to time. I've emptied the trash around studio B a fair bit myself. It's all part of the general upkeep of WFMU.
  1:48pm
KP:

Cecile, who did you see in '82. "Peter' does not seem to be on the board.
  1:48pm
Caryn:

Ooh, some Clannad would be good...
  1:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: Is there a recycle bin to adopt? Gotta recycle what we can!
  1:49pm
KP:

First wrong math question day. Not my field.
  1:49pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I want my news reports fair and balanced. I want my music totally whacked, WFMU-style. I'll be pledging later this week. Is there a neon WFMU sign somewhere that folks could adopt?
  1:50pm
Van in DC:

@Ken - there might be a neon "ON AIR" somewhere... :)
  1:51pm
Mike East:

Well I'll be there on Saturday - so I will make sure to do my part.
  1:53pm
KP:

March is almost here. Nightnoise. Bothy Band.
  1:53pm
Caryn:

@Ken: I seem to remember a neon-lit item or two on the adoption page...
  1:53pm
Danne D:

While Julie has been adopted, I believe her comments board has yet to be claimed
  1:57pm
KP:

Dd. That picture is priceless. Maybe if it still available this Dark Night.
  1:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Julie's is one of my fav comment boards, yet I use all my pledge for swag (there's just TOO MUCH GREAT STUFF!) and Yo La Tengo song. If I was richer I'd pledge for all the swag I want, AND adopt a crapload of stuff as well!
  1:58pm
KP:

I think the adoption is "free" alongside the swag, no?
  1:59pm
c2677:

i missed the last DJ break... how do we find out if we won a prize if we miss the announcement live?
  1:59pm
Danne D:

You get swag with adoption - adoption is just a bonus inducement for pre-paid pledges. For example I did a prize account for $x and pre-paid it and also adopted the wonderful Amanda Nazario :)
  2:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

@KP: T-shirts, bumper stickers and other accesories are given along with premiums, depending on how much you give--but I think adoptions are another separate thing to pledge for.
  2:00pm
G:

@Matt: I sponsored Monica's board for this year. I'm usually not up between 3 and 6 AM here in the eastern US timezone, or if I am I am not online :-), so I rarely see Julie's board live. Often I see it dead, the next day. :-)

@KP: If you hit 180 for the year, the adoption comes with the other premiums.
  2:01pm
KP:

Ask Julie, she's adopted.
  2:01pm
Danne D:

Help WFMU with a paid pledge of $180 or more and earn naming rights to a fixture, or donate $365 to adopt a DJ at the WFMU Magic Factory. Every marathon adoption comes with naming rights for the fixture in question, and an adorable little plaque affixed to it with your name on it.
  2:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Here And Now" is a great album! I bought it after they were on Irwin's show. North Carolinians, with other great NCians in the session credits. The guys from Roman Candle, as well as a *certain* drummer from Superchunk you hear here all the time...:)
  2:02pm
Van in DC:

How about Kenzo? Can someone adopt Kenzo? 'Cause someone probably should adopt Kenzo. Just sayin' :)
  2:03pm
Danne D:

If you would like to adopt a DJ or a Fixture, and have naming rights to him, her, or it for the next 12 months, please make a paid-in-full pledge to WFMU's 2012 Marathon by 11:59pm on March 4th, 2012, and then send an email via this page to stake your claim. Make sure that you specify in the email which DJ or Fixture you would like!

First come, first served!
  2:03pm
12539:

Matt, if you've already paid, you should grab Julie's board.
  2:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne,G: Okay thanks, great to know! I often pre-pay my pledge before the Marathon, so I'll remember that for next time. (This year I'm trying out pledging a bit to all the shows I like, sending in a lump sum at the end.)
  2:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

Muy bueno! Gracias, Jenny de los Empañadas! :)
  2:04pm
Danne D:

@Van - I think being able to adopt Kenzo is a capital idea. I would e-mail the adoption powers that be about adding him and/or Kenzo himself as I believe he'd have to be willing to be adopted as it were :)
  2:05pm
Cecile:

Irene, play Julie some Paul Metzger...
  2:05pm
KP:

Modal. Was he the guy from Philly?
  2:05pm
Danne D:

@Matt yup there you go. I don't know how it works if mid-stream you decided to pay for the pledges you've already made. Probably a Joe McGasko question. That probably gets complicated.
  2:06pm
G:

Email Joe McG and ask if you are not sure you can still adopt based on your paid total. Or, roll the dice and find something to adopt that your annual paid pledge adds up to, and email him asking to name/adopt that. The link to the adoption gallery is on the home page.
  2:06pm
Danne D:

Adoptable or know, getting thank you notes brighten Kenzo's day :) And you can always honor him in the comments section of your pledge.
  2:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, I didn't know you were on with Debbie D, Julie! I actually threw in an unscheduled pledge to Ichiban when I noticed Ted Barron had a show there -- I didn't realize they were putting original shows on that stream, I was happy to help. Support the scrappy underdogs! :)
  2:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Amanda is great, I'm dropping her (and Doug's stream!) a pledge this Wed--unfortunately I can't listen to GTDR at work, stupid network policies! But maybe they can start a Flash stream...if people pledge enough to GTDR, maybe? ;)
  2:13pm
Van in DC:

ha ha @Matt - I dropped in to that Ichiban stream for the first time ever when Julie was on and saw your pledge. I figured you, like me, had checked it out because Julie was on it :). And yep, GTDS!
  2:15pm
Van in DC:

By "saw your pledge" I mean I heard Julie announce it on the stream :)
  2:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

A new dawn of online shows on WFMU, now is a great time to listen! To comment! To pledge! To bask in the resulting love of FMU!

@Van: Aww, I thought you could *see* sound! :)
  2:17pm
Roberto:

Holy crap, that version of W.A.R. was niiiiice
  2:19pm
Van in DC:

Okay, I sent an email to John Dalton, the FMU Adoption Guru regarding Kenzo :)
  2:19pm
KP:

Van. i just happened to have tuned into that stream out of boredom, first time ever on a separate stream, and heard julie cackling. That was worth a pledge.
  2:19pm
Danne D:

@Matt - while you can't get pop-up player GTDR live, you can use it when listening to the archived shows :)
  2:20pm
Caryn:

Gotta admit, I was singing along to "Walk Away Renee"...
  2:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

All the Vampires out there, wake up! Draw the shades, call or pledge online before going back to bed!

Only after 3 am.
  2:22pm
Van in DC:

@Danne D - that is so funny. First show I ever listened to on WFMU was Dark Night of the Soul, and I had to wake up in the middle of the night to do it!
  2:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Yes, I thought about commenting before while listen to the PREVIOUS week's show, but thought that was too confusing! (I tried that before actually, when PLS streams were first blocked at work) :) So I listen to the Archives when I can.

Irwin has long been a "gateway drug" at FMU, but Julie has rapidly caught up in new listeners who say they found this through her.
  2:23pm
Danne D:

@kp - it seems that some folks are tuning into the shifts Julie is emceeing and discovering more FMU awesomeness :)
  2:25pm

Stan is awesome!
  2:28pm
Danne D:

Chris T was my initial gateway.
I think the Hound was the next show I heard.
Then SSD semi-accidentally as I thought it was Chris T's show (not realizing the whole 1-day-a-week show thing here).
Then probably Wild Girl and Trash Twang and Thunder and Radio Active Theater which almost nobody seems to remember.
Probably heard Terre's show a couple times around then too but not regularly tuned in.
Won $25 that was put in Western Union on a SSD episode (which sadly hasn't been reaired/refound) and that sorta got me feeling I needed to pledge something ($10 at the next marathon).
Started volunteering - actually first met Terre and had a cool convo with her and she was NOT on the schedule at the time - only later would hear and realize how great her show was when she was back on the schedule. And the rest kinda was history from there.
  2:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

@KP: That was an awesome initiation into the Ichiban stream--I would pledge out of ecstasy too!
  2:29pm
KP:

Yes i was on train with my iphone. It was hilarious.
  2:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: "Legend of a Mind"...Meredith Ochs, Trash Twang and Thunder! I saw old playlists for that, shame it's not on anymore (or even Toothpick Rhythm!)

I have to help out my adopted DJ! Next person to make that "half mouse" $180 pledge - I will match it with $185, and beg Joe to have the amount credited to YOU to get you to a full-Mouse pledge!
  2:32pm
Danne D:

@woj yes indeed - they would have callers call in to play roles in skits
  2:33pm
Danne D:

Would love to hear old eps of that - whether the given show's premise worked or not. I'm pretty sure hearing that lead me to listen to Meredith as I think they were on the same night.

thought so! we called in once and gave them some seeds for an improv. i don't remember what they came up with but some of the things they came up with still are part of our lexicon to this day -- in particular, the chanting of "dead air dead air dead air dead air" to the tune of the mission impossible theme song.

Has WFMU thought about a 900-number to raise money? Press 1 to hear Julie talk about something for example, press 2 for Clay, 3 for Jonesie, etc...We got some great voices here! :)

Sandy singing "She Moves Through The Fair"...blissful.

Thank you also Irene, for playing the ORIGINAL single of Judy Collins "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" some years ago. I wanted to hear how that sounded last year, and was pleased to find it quickly on one of your Archives!

Even local classical station WETA had "call now and have your pledge matched" periods during their pledging week recently. These were matches done by another listener who had already done their part.

Danne D:

@KP - Firefox has been a little weird with my pledges too. But I've been getting the E-mail receipt and that's what I've been using as my guidepost to whether the pledge went through.

did you get an e-mail, KP? check your last pledge mail and see if you comments line-up (or the fact that it was pledged to Irene)
  2:53pm
Andrew:

Van: Yes, +10:1 is Tinariwen in their language. The "alphabet" is missing the vowels, so +10:1 is TNRWN. Most of the letters do not look like familiar symbols as these do.

It was:

Andrew:

Since you commented.
+10:1 is tinariwen written in the Tamazight abjad. Abjad means an alphabet without vowels. So + is t, 1 is n, 0 is r, and : is w. By a coincidence all the letters of their name look sort of like familiar symbols to us, but the 0 on my t-shirt with the camel on the guitar neck is very round, a little wider than it is tall.
