(That Komeda fade-out is on the record, btw, in case anyone was wondering why we'd do that...)

Doug S.:
Anyone interested in hearing MORE Krzysztof Komeda is urged to visit the fine blog A Darker Shade of Blue. (The site offered a 5-CD box of Komeda's music here: http://bit.ly/JdTxG5) The blog recently went "private," but it was simple to join up. New membership is suspended for the moment, but I recommend keeping an eye on the site and joining up when it gets re-opened.

Dervish:
According to Wikipedia, Afternoon of a Faun was originally "L'après-midi d'un faune," a poem by Stéphane Mallarmé. Inspired by the poem, Debussy wrote the music for a ballet "Afternoon of a Faun" by Nijinsky. Then Jerome Robbins choreographed a ballet based in Nijisnky's work.

I never heard that Marion Brown piece. That was awesome!
I find it so easy to dismiss ECM based on so much of the Eberhard Weber-ish end of the catalog. Then along comes a Marion Brown or a Paul Motian and I fall in love all over again. I played Dave Holland's "Conference of the Birds" last week and was swoonful.
1:15pm
northguineahills:
Come on Doug, Eberhard Weber is fine.... maybe once every 6 years.... (yes, I have 2 of his LPs)
1:16pm
Hugo:
Totally agree with the verdict on the early days of ECM (before it became formularised). Still have a copy of "Afric Pepperbird" (and the Marion Brown).
@NHG
I am not proud of my knee-jerk reactions. When you review my history, you'll discover that 15-30 years after I decide to revile an artist/genre, I end up infatuated with it.
Eberhard (gulp) here I come?
1:19pm
Hugo:
I have to admit that the AEC records for ECM do sound good, though.
1:20pm
northguineahills:
Eberhard is not an artist you want to double-down on, however.
1:20pm
duke:
Marc Ribot sounds like he's channeling Sonny Sharrock. Not a bad thing to do.
@duke: Agreed. This is the first thing on the album, though, so it sort of goes downhill from here.
1:32pm
northguineahills:
Man, I love Marilyn Crispell.
1:53pm
Dan in Seattle:
I love Marilyn Crispell, too. No, I mean really love her. As Woody Allen would say, "I lufff her."
2:18pm
duke:
People keep asking me questions and expecting me to do things. How am I gonna keep up with important stuff with all these interruptions? Don't they know DO is on?
as always, jeff & jeff, a wonderful tour. thanks gents!
