	12:33pm SIR LANCELOT PRATT: speaking of Hendrix's machine Gun, once had the DVD of the Band of Gypsies live gig at the fillmore east. Unfortunately the film went Black and white inot the second track - does anyone know why?

	12:35pm Rich in Washington: I got to see them Friday night. Packed house, despite most people's grumblings about the price-tag.
	12:35pm SIR LANCELOT PRATT: no - UM - had enough to see it through, but always guessed that there was live tv coverage and that part of the filming had to be in black and white as most of tvs were not color in 1970?
	12:37pm SIR LANCELOT PRATT: as this track started had the nasty feeling that you were playing Sad Cafe, now convinced this is not the case but some great art damaged alternative rock.
	12:37pm MrFab: Sir Lance, I believe that would be due to a lack of light, a condition of primitive video. it need lots of light. The Residents were very entertaining, as weird and surreal as you would expect - no more eyeballs head, tho. The Singing Resident (now calling himself "Randy") spent much of the show in between-song monlogues that were quite funny at times, giving a history of the band that mixed facts with their usual mythologizing. Mucially, it was very stripped down - perhaps a bit too much so.

	12:40pm Tony Coulter: Thanks, Fab. I'm not a fan of their more recent material (as in the last 20+ years!), but figured they might still be fun live. Should have gone.

	12:44pm Tony Coulter: @ Sir LP: Sui Generis are a great band. They were from Argentina, as were Bubu (on now).
	12:45pm Tony Coulter: @ Rev. Turnip: I'm a mega-fan of the early Residents. "Santa Dog" and "Meet the..." are tops for me.

	12:46pm MrFab: Well, as it was a 40th anniversary show, they did play a lot of oldies, even their first record "Santa Dog." And a Snakefinger song 'The Man in the Dark Sedan", in an unexpectedly moving, sincere tribute.

	12:49pm Tony Coulter: @ Rev. Turnip: At one point they were planning to train their kids to be their replacements, so that the Residents could live on in perpetuity. Don't know if that ever came to pass.

	12:53pm SIR LANCELOT PRATT: Tony, for your information Poopik comes from the yiddish word Pupik and can mean:- belly button Navel gizzard chicken stomach. It is a little chicken stomach commonly used in Jewish Cuisine in chicken soup.

Pretty sure my friend and I spotted the two other musicians out of 'uniform' and assisting with break-down after the show. They're quite young.
	12:57pm Rich in Washington: I have heard that one of the Residents' early defectors went on to be in Freshly Wrapped Candies. It sounds plausible, to my ears.
	12:58pm Tony Coulter: I gather one of the original members lived (lives?) in Portland, hence their appearances on KBOO in the '70s.

	1:00pm Tony Coulter: Hey Brian! It's possible, given that he's 15. I think, though, that's it's just that he's a pain.
	1:01pm Rich in Washington: I don't think so. The Portland connection was friend, Bill R, who was a DJ in the mid-70s. I interviewed Homer Flynn last week and he confirmed that KBOO was the first station to play The Residents. Bill did a wonderfully weird show called Radio Lab until about '79 or so. He's also responsible for some pretty cool YouTube videos showing the early Rez' studio, etc...

Turnip Druid: Somewhere amongst my crap I still have my VHS of the episode of Night Flight (mole show era) which featured an "interview" with the residents (one besuited eyeball-head character not speaking, and a young "interpreter") . Great show. Was my first glimpse of many of those early videos.

	1:10pm Uncle Michael: My legendary Uncle knew those guys early on. He thought they were just Bay Area artists friends of his and showed me the recorded Xmas card they once sent him. It was an original copy of Santa Dog.

	1:13pm Jeremy: Just ran into Gary Panter at his gallery show and was chatting with him about music. He said the Residents are "nice guys" I've met some bay area musicians who have played with them and they always say something similar, "just regular fellas"
	1:13pm Tony Coulter: @ Uncle Michael: Wow! I'm impressed! Who's your uncle, pray tell? (If you feel comfortable divulging, that is.)
	1:15pm Tony Coulter: In my experience, musicians who do "crazy" music are usually perfectly sane -- it's the pop stars who are nuts.
	1:15pm Susan: Hmm...I know what you mean about being woken by cats. Part of the reason I had a half hour's sleep was because I was woken to their fighting over the food dish! Gotta love 'em though! I've tried to be a morning person time and time again. I gave up!

	1:17pm Uncle Michael: My Uncle Jim Newman founded the Other Minds festival with Charles Amirkhanian, produced the Sun Ra film Space is the Place and has done some other cool stuff. He's 80 and plays bari sax with the Junius Courtney band for fun. Oh, he's the guy that brought Brubeck to Oberlin and wrote the liner notes on the back of the LP too...

	1:25pm MrFab: Actually Jeremy, reading "Space is the Place" only reinforced the mystery of Sun Ra. I came away from the book more baffled than ever. And not due to poor research or writing, just the fact that Ra was a genuine enigma. 'Tis a good read.

	2:48pm SIR LANCELOT PRATT: Tony, looks like you have been checking out lots of funky hip hop labels like Stones Throw, Numero, and the breakbeat friendly lp by Annette Peacock. Could it be you are now digging a bit of cool soul funk?
	2:51pm Tony Coulter: I've always liked a bit of that in the mix -- though as for Stones Throw and Numero I've only dipped a pinky toe into their funk stuff -- they release other flavors as well.
	2:53pm SIR LANCELOT PRATT: both labels are excellent and present top quality material, expertly remastered. Stuff that was slept on at the time of its original release.

	12:35pm Rich in Washington: I got to see them Friday night. Packed house, despite most people's grumblings about the price-tag.
	12:35pm SIR LANCELOT PRATT: no - UM - had enough to see it through, but always guessed that there was live tv coverage and that part of the filming had to be in black and white as most of tvs were not color in 1970?
	12:37pm SIR LANCELOT PRATT: as this track started had the nasty feeling that you were playing Sad Cafe, now convinced this is not the case but some great art damaged alternative rock.
	12:37pm MrFab: Sir Lance, I believe that would be due to a lack of light, a condition of primitive video. it need lots of light. The Residents were very entertaining, as weird and surreal as you would expect - no more eyeballs head, tho. The Singing Resident (now calling himself "Randy") spent much of the show in between-song monlogues that were quite funny at times, giving a history of the band that mixed facts with their usual mythologizing. Mucially, it was very stripped down - perhaps a bit too much so.

	1:01pm Rich in Washington: I don't think so. The Portland connection was friend, Bill R, who was a DJ in the mid-70s. I interviewed Homer Flynn last week and he confirmed that KBOO was the first station to play The Residents. Bill did a wonderfully weird show called Radio Lab until about '79 or so. He's also responsible for some pretty cool YouTube videos showing the early Rez' studio, etc...

	1:13pm Jeremy: Just ran into Gary Panter at his gallery show and was chatting with him about music. He said the Residents are "nice guys" I've met some bay area musicians who have played with them and they always say something similar, "just regular fellas"
