	12:35pm Tower: I like the closer guitar work on Oak Leaf Memories and the rhythm on A Thousand Cranes better than the far back ethereal tracks, but it's all very good.

	2:04pm Tony Coulter: Hey NGH! 22 years ago is relatively recent?!? I will say, apropos of nothing, that '90s cassettes tend to sound a little better sound-quality-wise than ones from the '80s.

	2:10pm Tony Coulter: Overall, the '80s were the "golden age" for cassette underground–type stuff, hence the show is weighted '80s, I guess.
	2:10pm Loren: I stumbled back in... is this Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra... sounds pretty cool.
	2:11pm Loren: Is it possible these recordings are from 1989, but not committed for release until 1991?

	2:12pm Rich in Washington: Seems like it was the early nineties when really good cassette technology was much more accessible. I remember when a dual cassette deck was sort of an exotic, relatively unobtainable item.

	2:13pm Rich in Washington: There's some African Funeral music in there that I recognize from a strange compilation I have.
	2:16pm Doug Schulkind: Did anyone ever buy into the whole "metal" thing with the higher-end cassettes? I was always happy enough with the chrome.
	2:17pm Tony Coulter: I did buy metal cassettes for a while there for really important stuff, but never noted a dramatic difference.
	2:18pm Uncle Michael: I don't think tape culture even starts to end till CD burners in home computers became standard equipment. @Doug, I tried 'em. I pretty much stuck to Maxell XLII-S and TDK SA toward the end...or whatever they were continually re-branded to be called.
	2:18pm Rich in Washington: It seemed to me that I had bad luck with metal cassettes. It seemed like they didn't last long, started having problems in terms of shelf life.
	2:19pm Rich in Washington: I have many, many TDK SAs that have been stored in less-than-ideal ways and they still sound pretty good.
	2:20pm Ike: Doug, I could never discern a quality difference between type IV ("metal") and type II blank cassettes. IIRC, Consumer Reports said the same.
	2:20pm Tony Coulter: @ Uncle Micheal: Agreed that tape culture continued well into the '90s and even beyond, and of course has a second life these days. Just meant that the '80s was the really groundbreaking era, and that a lot of people switched from cassette to vinyl or CD by the late '80s.
	2:21pm northguineahills: When I was in high school. I'd sometimes nick my father's metal cassettes (he used for work), but normally, whatever was available at Turtles worked for me.
	2:21pm Rich in Washington: I remember there was this no-name brand of cassettes that my brother and I would tape stuff on (we taped a lot of stuff off of the radio) and they sounded really good for the price and lasted a long time. We would buy up every one we'd see in stores. We called 'em 'rainbow tapes', because they had a rainbow on the label. The only thing they said on them was 'Low Noise'.
	2:22pm Uncle Michael: @Tony, I was speaking from the home-recordist, mix-tape, tape-trading perspective.
	2:22pm Tony Coulter: Ah, I gets you!
	2:27pm Uncle Michael: I went from Cassette to DAT to CD-R and was a pretty early CD-R adopter, wrestling with SCSI controllers. Ugh.
	2:28pm Doug Schulkind: I was always a TDK-SA guy. Don't know why. I have hundreds of them stashed in the closet, but nothing to play them with.
	2:32pm Rich in Washington: We had a lot of Sony UCXs for some reason. It seems like they had dropout problems, though.
	2:34pm Uncle Michael: When I first encountered cassette shells held together by screws I was so delighted. It's like someone knew I'd been repairing "eaten" tapes with scotch tape since 1972 and was finally taking pity on me.
	2:34pm fleep: I still have a Denon DRM-550 cassette deck, my reissued Impulse jazz collection is on tape. And ditto on the metal, it never made much difference.,
	2:35pm Uncle Michael: I love the kung fu rhythm track.
	2:35pm Rich in Washington: You could also make tape loops out of tapes that you could take apart.
	2:37pm Vartkes B.: Regarding the metal tape issue: I never noticed a difference either. I'm guessing if you had high-end equipment it might have mattered. Those TDK SAs bring back memories of heading to Uncle Steve's on Canal St to get a bunch for the (at the time) bargain price of $3.99 each! PS- did anybody use the "Dolby" setting?

	2:20pm Tony Coulter: @ Uncle Micheal: Agreed that tape culture continued well into the '90s and even beyond, and of course has a second life these days. Just meant that the '80s was the really groundbreaking era, and that a lot of people switched from cassette to vinyl or CD by the late '80s.
	2:21pm northguineahills: When I was in high school. I'd sometimes nick my father's metal cassettes (he used for work), but normally, whatever was available at Turtles worked for me.
	2:21pm Rich in Washington: I remember there was this no-name brand of cassettes that my brother and I would tape stuff on (we taped a lot of stuff off of the radio) and they sounded really good for the price and lasted a long time. We would buy up every one we'd see in stores. We called 'em 'rainbow tapes', because they had a rainbow on the label. The only thing they said on them was 'Low Noise'.

	2:27pm Uncle Michael: I went from Cassette to DAT to CD-R and was a pretty early CD-R adopter, wrestling with SCSI controllers. Ugh.
	2:28pm Doug Schulkind: I was always a TDK-SA guy. Don't know why. I have hundreds of them stashed in the closet, but nothing to play them with.
	2:32pm Rich in Washington: We had a lot of Sony UCXs for some reason. It seems like they had dropout problems, though.
	2:34pm Uncle Michael: When I first encountered cassette shells held together by screws I was so delighted. It's like someone knew I'd been repairing "eaten" tapes with scotch tape since 1972 and was finally taking pity on me.
	2:34pm fleep: I still have a Denon DRM-550 cassette deck, my reissued Impulse jazz collection is on tape. And ditto on the metal, it never made much difference.,

Those TDK SAs bring back memories of heading to Uncle Steve's on Canal St to get a bunch for the (at the time) bargain price of $3.99 each! PS- did anybody use the "Dolby" setting?
