Whats the greater term for this genre other than "early 20s music"? If dance music, can you comment on its origins? I think France, but I'm curious how you'd frame a short description. I guess British too. I hear Chaplin antics in some songs.

@JTE: One way to think of the types of songs you're referencing is as the 2-3 minute pop songs of the late 19th and early 20th century. They were performed in music halls or vaudeville venues, and starting way back before recorded music, people bought sheet music to perform the music themselves. Sheet music was still pretty big in the early 20th century.

Exactly, Dominick. British music hall ---> 50s UK skiffle revival (Lonnie Donegan was big there) ---> Ray Davies. Beatles show it too in not a few places. Etc.
