Hi Lamin!

I must admit that I actually like Alice Coltrane's music more than that of her husband.

I usually say the same about the Coltranes, but John on Ascension until his death was pure brilliant fire.

I had to disappear for that first bit. I love everything about this station (even the shows i hate i love), but i will never in a thousand years understand the appeal of any type of jazz. This stuff cuts through me like a knife. I'll still give you guys more money than i can afford come marathon time. But when the horns chime in here, i drift off to WFMU's only competition that i know of (who also play more jazz than i care for... what is it with you crazy kids and these freaking horns?).

we're hornier than you.

That must be it. I'm a bit of a prude.

steve:

i think Alice Coltrane is great but im mostly with you cklequ... the excessively noodley improvisational parts (which make up most of it) and the overall lack of repetition can be maddening. the only jazz i truly love is Black Woman by Sonny Sharrock, that rules.
Avatar 8:36pm
Droll:

cklequ, Why so much hatred of jazz? Surely you must find progressive rock more offensive, that way more widely disliked.

hey let me in downstairs ... I have no key!

As mentioned before, I've dumped a few girls b/c they said they hated jazz. That said, there is a lot shitty jazz out there.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Just think of Jazz as Blues for people who play too well. Do you hate sax in R&B too?
- Too bad - it's a whole continent of Music to explore!: 'Jazz' is a tiny word for a lot of things - but Taste is Taste!...

Woah, man this Jeff Mills kills!

@ngh: a high percentage of everything is mediocre in its way, but that just shows you what stands out

Steely Dan: Is it jazz, or just AOR?

I like jazz that sounds scratchy as hell and has a banjo somewhere in the mix. That's a small window.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
G:

I started listening to FMU deliberately in the 00s precisely in order to know about and "get" more music than I already did. As with literature and writing (in my case), you can spend a lot of time for decades and still have so many gaps in your knowledge...

Jazz is like Classical in that @ least you've prob. got a high level of instrumental competence. In Jazz - ya also gotta Swing - & Improvise, though!
- Every Genre - every type of Music - has typical Forms
- & some people just follow them in boring ways (say - bad Rock can be boring repetitive over-amped & washed-out Blues, Classical can be like people practicing their scales...)
- & some people do really Kewl things w/ them!
...But if simply not to Taste, all this matters not. I'm - musically promiscuous - so Variety works for me. If one is averse to some particular instrument's sound...I find it hard to relate, really! Nothing to say about that...

are jazz fans disproportionately musicians? my disinterest in jazz is matched only by my disinterest in musicianship...

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

cklequ: Are you saying you like Trad Jazz - really early 'Dixieland' stuff from N'Orleans? Like Louis Armstrong? I could relate better to that: As said - 'Jazz' is a tiny word for a great many things - & it's hard to find two Jazzbos to agree completely on it!
- That can be part of the fun, though. Whereas I find Rockfans can be standoffish about what is 'Cool' - my encounters w/ Jazzfans have been warm & welcoming into the small minority community of enthusiasts. Interesting - as that's prob. a reversal of the original historical situation!

Steve, A few months ago weren't you talking about some revolutionary new filter-sweep you invented? Got a demo yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm

That's why i listen to WFMU.... Musicianship is never called into question.
Avatar 9:00pm
steve:

Droll - i listen mostly to techno and disco. many of my heros are producers with zero musical training...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Interesting question, steve.
...I'd guess not necessarily - Music is the Universal Language after all
- but the more one knows about Music technically, the more one appreciates technical accomplishments - & they abound in Jazz & Classical esp. Pop/Rock, for example, special in the most basic 4/4 rhythms - whereas Jazz, Classical, & World step out of that more often...

I dig it, cool cats.

yes! the filter is for a client... itll be for sale in hopefully 6 months. i can talk about it in detail privately but probably shouldnt post anything Google searchable (like the comment board) about it yet...

...Power Pop time! : P
- Those Techno & Disco folx might have more to say about Music than you'd think! A lotta Hip-Hoppers know their Jazz pretty damned well, I have found...
