Let's come up with a new convention that doesn't imply rivalry. How about deciding which musicians provided the "floor" or "bed" of the mashup, and then saying that musician "hosts" the other one?

How does a vibraphone differ from a xylophone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm

It has a different vibe.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
rrg:

Gerry and the Pacemakers had a song called "La La La" also. But it didn't sound like this at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
Mike East:

@rrg - a vibraphone has metal bars and a motor that spins creating a vibrato/tremelo effect. a xylophone has wood bars, and no motor. difference in rental price, about $25
Avatar 3:57pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- no fair - he rents these things...
Avatar 3:57pm
Droll:

rrg, Vibes have rotating butterfly valves over the pipes. Marimba has wood tines that don't sustain much but xylophone has metal bars with enough sustain to make the butterfly valves do something useful to the tone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
rrg:

But a xylophone player could pick up and play the vibraphone no sweat, right?

Caryn, Lots of "live" albums have the equivalent of laugh-track. Frampton Comes Alive is notorious for sounding like it was recorded in a 30,000 seat arena even though it was closer to 6,000.
  4:35pm
JP:

what played briefly between Joe Frank and Estrogen Jihad?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm
rrg:

But I DO care if I'm disturbed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm
Irwin:

@JP: It was the outro of the JF ep. Don't know the artist, not ID'ed in the credits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
Caryn:

@Droll: see, for a live album I can kinda understand doing that (even if I'm a bit perturbed by it), but for average concerts? What's the point? It's not as if the audience doesn't go, "Hang on, there's nowhere near enough people here to make that much noise. Who the hell is doing that thunderous clapping in rhythm?"
  4:39pm
Laura L:

Thanks for the Joe Frank, Irwin--his particular disturbance is very welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm

@RRN63: yep, several audience members and a couple of critics there to review the concert then made it big news after they complained about the ridiculousness of it. Seriously, I see no point in doing that. It'll only end up turning people against you, as happened here.
Avatar 4:46pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...BobDylan had extra people booing piped in when he went electric : ) ...
Avatar 4:46pm
Droll:

Dubbed applause to punch-up a less-than-ecstatic audience is far less strange/gratuitous than adding a laugh-track to a studio-shot TV show which has no live audience.
I guess dubbing applause is less conspicuous than a big sign flashing APPLAUSE between songs like "live" TV shows use.

The first of the EmArcy recordings of the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet, this album features trumpeter Brown, drummer Max Roach, tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Richie Powell and bassist George Morrow in fine form. High points include "Stompin' at the Savoy," "I Get a Kick out of You" and Brown's ballad feature on "Ghost of a Chance." Near-classic music from a legendary group. [Originally released in 1954, Brown and Roach, Inc. was reissued on CD in 2004.]

I like that the word "glamour" isn't one of those words that's spelled differently by Americans and by Brits and contrarians. Like armor/armour, favor/favour, and all those. We all spell it the same way. We all get along.

All right, a few people use "glamor" but it's not a US-vs-Brit thing.

Yes. But from the earliest days of domain names spoken aloud the verbal convention has been to say "dot" for that period. Just as, for the brief time that it mattered, people said "bang" when reciting UUCP-style mail addresses, like research!rob or allegra!smb. Or usl!rrg.
