Favoriting Bryce: Playlist from August 23, 2013 Favoriting

I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm

@cd tap- because we couldn't come up with any other way to get the word out there that our bands were awesome. Hanging flyers makes you feel like you're doing something proactive.

To be fair, that band *has* been played on FMU. Laura Cantrell may have had them on live once as well (?). So it's not like totally out-of-context spam for snake oil horny-you-up drugs or shiny hair products or something, but it's still obnoxious.

DC has made a point of nailing the flyer-ing. Supposedly venues will get hit with fines if they don't catch the individuals posting. Ain't like it was.

RTD, What?! The club gets fined when the band posts flyers illegally? Aren't the clubs just going to wallpaper the city with bogus flyers for other clubs to get them in trouble? Does that pass for "competition"?
Avatar 1:15pm
Carmichael:

OK, I'm seriously goddamn hungry. Start talking lunch, people.
Avatar 1:15pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Droll: it's all very goofy. What we have now is a city annoyingly clean of underground "evidence." Flyers are left in very tidy stacks at yonder record store. Occasionally I'll see a flyer etc but I still miss the wheat-paste jungle we had once upon a time.

I got caught up in the science of flyer making at one point. Most groups had these artsy, cool, yet convoluted junk going on in their flyers and I could never figure out where/when/who. Then I saw other groups, 9353 is a good example, where the art was there but everything was crystal clear and could be gleaned in a moment. I started trying to make those: BLACK CAT, FRIDAY, OUR GROUP. that kind of thing..

I don't blame the city for banning posters: they're a stepping stone to sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll. That's what rock music is all about, promoting bad things. That's why I listen to nice music like Bryce plays: no lurid jungle beats to seduce innocents on THIS show! Bryce would never listen to, much less play rock drums. He's couth.

I am old enough to have seen Basquiat's samo graffiti on the empty industrial streets of Soho on my way to an internship at The Kitchen on Broome..and helped many bands/artists snipe (what we called wheatpasting flyers to walls). Did that a few nights with dance (yes) curator, Eric Bogosian, Ken would like to know- "We're not living in the dark ages". And saw many B&W xeroxed flyers for Branca, Liquid Liquid, Robert Ashley, any number of bands at CBs, Tier 3 et al. As teen, had no idea...that I was in the middle... though it sure was fun hanging those scooplights from Canal St, sniping and misc adventures inc hearing new music every week for free, sometimes same artist a couple of nights in a row.
