it depends on how you go, the most direct route is the worst, pretty much like riding on a highway the whole time. we took a longer but more scenic route, stopped for lunch and a long multiple-flat fix and it took me 6 hours
well, the first one was just from riding through a bunch of junk on the side of the road and getting a big metal bristle through my tube. The one today should have been avoided, my tires are a little worn out and I have a brand new gatorskin sitting at home. lessons learned-again
friend and former boss of mine cycled from bloomfield, nj to one town north of me (our workplace) to see if it could be done sans highways. this was 92, so he plotted out his route on paper and everything.
route was prob. something like one of these. maps.google.com...
I go out of my way to avoid major roads - or roads in general, if possible. There are quite a few long-distance bike trails here, although they vary from real asphalt bike roads to narrow dirt tracks to segments of major roads, depending on where you are.
all roads, it was recommended by a friend, the first time I rode it and I might have forgotten a few connections. Some of these roads were really small and scenic and others were pretty fast and lousy, I guess that's unavoidable long distance
