I'll try to squeeze a cocktail through the wires. If that doesn't work... there's vermouth and a gigantic jar of cherries in the station fridge, bitters in the Volunteer Room... somebody just needs to bring you some whisky.

Surely somebody will bring you some whiskey. And ice. And stir all that stuff together.

Meanwhile... I think I shall sip an English bitter. Perhaps some London Pride.

Yeah. No single malts are harmed in the cocktails here - Manhattans get on quite well with American rye whiskeys in them, or bourbons if you're in that sort of mood.

Wasn't 18 Wheeler Tom Scharpling's fanzine/record label?
  10:14pm
Andrew in Oklahoma:

Hello Faye I am listening. On the new app too wow!
Avatar 10:15pm
Jeff:

Although... I do one "Manhattan" version at home which is scotch-whisky-themed.

The body of the drink is constructed using a mild blended scotch whisky, but it's served in a brandy snifter, and said snifter has had a wee splash of Bowmore 15 swirled around in it to coat the inside of the glass.

Smelling all that peat as you drink befuddles the senses and makes you think the whole beverage might be as peaty as the scents you sense. It's a fun drink.

Oh, and a regular bright-red maraschino cherry just isn't the right thing in that drink. Gotta use those Luxardo dark candied marasca cherries.

Howdy, ma'am.

'In the early 1990s, Scharpling was the publisher of 18 Wheeler fanzine, and ran an independent record label of the same name. The first 7-inch single by Portastatic was released by Scharpling's label in 1992...' (From Sharpling's Wiki page)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

wow Andrew in OK!!! hello simon! Jeff, I imagine that you can make a good Gin martini. which is my favorite cocktail. I'm interested in your gin opinions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Faye:

yikes! I feel sorry to not have already known that... thank you Shaun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm

I make a pretty dandy martini, which for many years, was all I drank. No fancy ultra-expensive gins, though.
Avatar 10:21pm
dk:

mr. scharpling's significance and ubiquity is such that it's probably safe to assume that if you see a "tom s." anywhere, it's him. in fact, if you meet a "tom s." who ISN'T scharpling, it's probably safe to assume they don't actually exist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm

Jeff:

@listener mark: That's just the legend, a tale spun by X Ray Burns, who is as we all know an excellent spinner of tales. There is no magical case, though I like the image.

Occasionally, tasty drinkables might emerge from a bag... or the inner pocket of a specially-equipped jacket. Or from under a cape.

But not from a case.

Faye, do you know who will be filling in for you while you're out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Faye:

yes m'dear it's Danny Blumin
Avatar 10:47pm
Jeff:

To our hostess and her love of the martini:

First: a martini is a gin drink. So while I applaud your appreciation of a proper (gin) martini, I see no need to unnecessarily specify "gin martini", because a drink which contains no gin is not a martini.

There is no such thing as a "vodka martini" because such a drink just isn't a martini. Isn't now, never will be. So those people who like whatever that is will need to come up with their own name for it, and leave the word "martini" alone.

Done with that snark, on to the drink... it's so simple, and so gin-forward, that you really taste the herb blend of the gin. So while the gin you use needn't necessarily be expensive, it does matter which you use - it has to be one you like, and they're so different! And sure, some of the ones which taste great cost more than jug gin.

Find a dry vermouth you like - I'm pretty fond of Dolin Dry.

Find a great olive - maybe Spanish, nothing stuffed into it. Discover through delicious trial and error how much of the olive brine you like left on it (or you may want to rinse it in water or vermouth).

Find your preferred ratio. I've pretty much settled on the 4:1 to 5:1 range, eschewing the insane "dryness" competition of the late 20th century. (In the Thirties - think our icons Nick and Nora - 3:1 was more the norm).

Stir 'til really really cold, serve in a freezer-chilled cocktail glass, drink before it's bathwater-warm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Blumin, huh? Never heard of him. You're sure of that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I am totally joking. He had this time slot for a while and filled in on WFMU just recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm

okay, Jeff, I agree! I always thought martinis were a Gin drink but bartenders always assume I mean vodka

Jeff:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
pacific standard simon:

@ Jeff - everything you say, spot on. Will add that mixing technique is important -- I prefer a shaker, held so that it can be swirled with the bottom hand, not shaken up and down. Makes a crystal clear cocktail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
