I saw Reed's Metal Machine Trio concert 3 years ago in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Most of the audience was there to see him, not listen the Metal Machine Music. After the concert, he comes back for an encore and played I'll Be Your Mirror by himself. I was amazed and considered it an act of generosity by him to his fans attending that night.

Surprised she didn't take Virginia.
Anyway my father would've turned 80 today but for smoking so I can't endorse the caller theme.

I remember seeing him play with Victoria Williams once in NYC (where he was the surprise guest - but it was certainly the one time I went to show expecting the surprise guest as it was shortly after the Sweet Relief benefit CD had come out)

I once sat in Jimmy's Corner Bar near Times Square listening to two dudes talking next to me. One said he was a recording engineer, working with Lou Reed on what later turned out to be Ecstasy. This guy said Lou was a really nice guy, fun to work for. One day, Lou came in to the studio and announced that he didn't feel like working, he felt like going to Coney Island. So the band and the whole recording crew spent the day eating Nathan's and sitting in the sun at Coney Island, all on the clock! What a guy!

Dan, FWIW I don't hear the smoking theme as any kind of endorsement for smoking.

I had a few encounters with Lou Reed. The first time, I operated the freight elevator for him because his handler didn't want him waiting for the passenger elevator.
Another time, he came storming out of the studio demanding that the trash can be emptied...which I made happen as quickly as possible.
Also, I blamed his production team for the loss of my stapler...but I'm over it now.

Of course, someone could test that theory by calling in as "cancer death stick".

I believe that Lou and Laurie dissed the New York Transplant Programs.

@Otto Neither do I, but still wouldn't go there with a call tbh

Songs for Drella was 1-CD

But it was done as a live performance piece (video) - different than the released CD

Teri Gross had nothing but nice things to say about you, Chris

Danne D:

I've actually had some very recent twitter exchanges about Songs for Drella within the last month (before Lou's passing). It's a worthy part of the legacy of the Velvets in every sense - even the sense that I don't recall it selling particularly well or producing singles (which of course wasn't the point of the CD) - yet it's very well remembered by its fans.

Danne D:

I listened to Songs for Drella for about a month solid when it came out. Such a favorite.

And pretty much any time I would come into NYC by PATH I'd think "Caught between the twisted stars the plotted lines the faulty map that brought Columbus to New York" when I'd emerge from underground.

Hey, I'm the guy who heard those guys talking in Jimmy's Corner! I've been trying to call in without success! I posted that on two websites. Somebody plagiarized me!

Jeff:

The cigarette-brand aliases make me want to call in just so I could call myself "Shepheard's Hotel" (after the German cigarettes made with American tobacco and named after a hotel in Cairo).

But I've got nothing to add to this show as a caller, so I won't impose that on everybody.

I heard the news of Lou Reed's passing on the Glen Jone's Radio Program. Facebook be damned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm

@mcs - me too (not on facebook anyway). I was glad that Jonesy played a tribute that he obviously didn't know that he'd be doing that day.

@mcs - me too. God bless Glen Jone and his radio program.
Avatar 6:56pm
Danne D:

@mcs - I found out via twitter - and immediately made sure I switched Jonesy on.

Jonesy's tribute was great and on the mark and spot - just like he always does it.

Agreed. Jonesy put together a really good in-the-moment tribute set.
