Guido (Cologne):

That sounded like an unknown single from Margo Guryan ...
... never would guess for Francoise ...
... surprise surprise.

Hi out there!

Hello All!

Howdy Duane and maniac Duaniacs!

Nice Neil Young cover. Although it's a bit drippy, Helpless is one my my favorite Neil songs. There's a Nick Cave and Bad Seeds cover of it that's solid.

This so weird Duane, I went on an Ivy binge over this past weekend...

Pitchfork.. ha ha ha
Avatar 12:43pm
robyn:

Pitchfork writing sometimes falls into the trap of "Artist X usually does this, but now they do THAT!" Just not very interesting to read. And not a lot of connection to the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
common:

that's funny you're talking about the pitchfork list. my co-worker just came in and told me my friend's band was on it. good for them.
Avatar 12:46pm
Duane:

common: Yeah that's great:) I had no real problem with the choices, just the writing..Yikes!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
tim from champaign:

I quit reading pitchfork about 10 years ago because of the frustrating quality of its writing. They would pan things I thought were good and champion music that I thought to be terrible. That's fine but the explanations of why rarely held water. Too bad the critical thought didn't grow as the site grew.

Hi Duane, cool as ever, nice to hear Turtle getting rinsed, you will come to Glasgow one day, I insist upon it :)

i have a brief best of list:

best album or collection / only record to make me break down in tears - DJ Sprinkles - Queerifications and Ruins
best podcast - Nicky Siano
best artist i've still never heard on FMU - Pye Corner Audio
best return to the FMU schedule - $mall ¢hange

Eli:

Good morning D and the Duaneiacs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
tim from champaign:

I also agree with Duane in that I think it's totally cool for poeople to dig Beyonce or Drake but why does Pitchfork promote it? If you like MacDonods that's cool but does it's new sandwich need a review?
Avatar 12:52pm
Duane:

Eli!!! What's the haps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Pitchfork just seems overly occupied with being ahead of cool.
  12:54pm
Eli:

Just hapsin' D! What was the song just before aphrodite's child? Didn't come up and loved it. No place in the city for me...
Avatar 12:57pm
steve:

tim - someone needs to start a blog where they critique sandwiches in the Pitchfork writing style. "The McRib is in danger of becoming irrelevant."
Avatar 12:58pm
Duane:

Oh that's Saadi. Great new 7' Eli
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I just remember the last Pitchfork review I read being so heavily focused on how the keyboard sounded that it really didn't mention that it was a review for a fairly generic indie rock band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
tim from champaign:

Good idea, steve. One could go to town on the shamrock shake.
Avatar 1:00pm
Duane:

AWaterloo: YES! That's there approach to criticism in general these days..it's so annoying
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Duane, It's a bit of the deifying thing that made classic rock commentary intolerable.
Avatar 1:03pm
kwhitehead:

steve: I think the sandwich reviews would be great written in the Dusty Groove style as well. This tuna salad is "tripped out, funky genius..."

Brazil's very generous with its graduate students, thanks to a very unequal country eheh

@steve: I've graduated in history and I study historiography, the study of the history of historical writing, its elements (like the concepts of proof, document, time etc). Now I'm gonna start a research on a sixteenth-century portuguese antiquarian called André de Resende

@Guido: I didn't know it! Surely having more readers help a little bit, but I was already surprised and overjoyed when I saw your comment. I didn't know that that saying about water and persistence went back to classical sources. Shame on me that I'm a historian

Wow, sounded like Maureen McGovern crossed with Karen Carpenter there for a minute
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
Guido (Cologne):

Well , that saying is VERY common in Germany. Maybe because we Germans are so serious about reliability and persistance. Kind of mentality. Even Bert Brecht used this motiv somewehre in a ballad (something about Tao-te-King ... dunno why).

Avatar 2:19pm
doca:

@luca: water dripping day by day wears even the hardest rock away. I've never seen it in English, but that translation (not mine) is very good, so I guess it is used. In Portuguese it is "Água mole em pedra dura tanto bate até que fura"
