Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I sincerely think that the godawful rhythm section was far more of a factor in Queen never being album rock giants in the US than homophobia was. It really shows on Tie Your Mother.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
Uncle Michael:

That's an interesting point. I don't think sexuality hurt them as a singles band at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
pacific standard simon:

That's odd -- I was just thinking that I had forgotten how absolutely HUGE Queen was in the mid-to-late '70s. Plus the bass player wrote some wonderful bass lines.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Goyim in the AM:

They were my absolute idols until News of the World, and they felt like a cult band, and headed for the pop radio rather than album rock after that. I agree about the bass lines, but their best, funkiest stuff either had sequencers or Freddie playing the hell out of rhythm piano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Alex In Illinois:

I thought that Queen were album rock giants in the US. I knew a buch of people who were totally into them, starting off in elementary school. This was in the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri, where the Midwest meets the South.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
Goyim in the AM:

Top 40 giants, hell yes; album rock, nope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
Stevel:

Queen's sexuality was a worst-kept secret. Guessing many knew, but many of us in the radio audience never put it together. Their near-fascist delivery (remembering a rock column that made that charge) made any 'questionable' posturing appear pretty 'manly' against the androgynous glam background.

AOR stil sends chills to my spine. I was lucky enough to bond with FM during the brief golden period of commercial freeform in the early 70s. The advent of AOR was fucking BAD news, even in ny 15 year old ears. Hence the devotion to this wunnerful institution that we're all committed in or to

Hear, hear -- but I grew up btw DC and Baltimore, so where I could make arrangements with my room antenna to get free form commercial and college stuff at home, AOR was the best choice in the car, until the brief return (and long slow awful decline) of WHFS.

I was going to mention something lik that, but I was afraid that if I said anything negative about AOR, people would get mad, and I did not want to do that. I was going to sa that when St. Louis radio had segregated into "Dance" verses "AOR" formats, I then entered the long "more punk/NewWave than thou" phase, and became part of a following of the 10 watt college radio station of Washington University.
