Favoriting May 14, 2014: Sex, Drugs + Rock 'n' Roll
An homage to everyone's favorite vices, alternately panegyrized and censured by Brazilian 420 activists, Palestinian Just-Say-No-ers, handjob-begging Islamic punks, and guitar heroes and haters from Beijing to Warsaw.

Well, let me just say that, I had a great job for 13 years and now I'm looking for something else.

Not intentional on my part, no.

Thanks, Carol! I'm going to make extremely good use of the time I've been given -- I feel like I've earned that much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm

It just happened yesterday, so I'm still getting used to the idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm

Sounds like a good plan - make the best of things, and who knows what's next. Sorry if that sounds a bit clichéd.

Hi Gary! I'm making country-style pork ribs, asparagus in asparagus puree, and potatoes roasted in duck fat -- but they just won't fit down the internet tubes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
pacific standard simon:

I do know who John Wieners is -- I have several shelves full of poetry, and I'm sure he's in some of those anthologies -- but I can't recall any favorites that he might have written.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Gary:

Hey Simon! We picked up some asparagus here at the Farmers Market last Sunday, but I think our plans for them are much less thrilling than your own
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
pacific standard simon:

You know your mom might be listening to this song, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
listener james from westwood:

There was a discussion on Twitter earlier among a few copy editors over whether the term being mentioned in this song should be written closed, as "handjob," or open, as "hand job." Closed won the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Gary:

Wieners might be in one of the, gosh, like Don Allen anthologies?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
davex:

I do a lot of copy editing, but have yet to have that particular problem!

@pss - just to be a bitch, must tell you that 2 weeks ago I was lucky enough to eat asparagus freshly dug from my neighbor's yard, that and fresh eggs from their chickens = perk of dog/chicken sitting for them.

Said asparagus was delicious raw. I fervently hope that everyone has the opportunity, someday, to eat asparagus right out of the ground.

The rest of course, I ate with the eggs! :-)

One of the great regrets of living in an apartment is no plot of land to till. Not enough light in here to grow anything more than an herb garden. Which is still better than nothing, but not as good as going from vine or ground to table in 10 steps.

Hi there! To take it back from sweet to spicy, there is a great new Thai steam table joint called Khao Kang on Woodside Ave. (Elmhurst/Jackson Hts.). They can't tone it down for farangs because the food is already made, so some of the dishes are spicy enough to melt your face off! $7.50 for 3 things over rice. Really nice.

@Holly - the asparagus stems required no straining -- try roasting them to complete softness, next time, then puree with EVOO , lemon and garlic. Or you could roast the garlic with the asparagus!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm

I'm lazy with asparagus. I just bend them near the thick end till they snap. The stump is the tough part. The rest is tender.

Holly in NC:

We *could* start an argument regarding what exactly comprises a russian dressing, vs 1000 island vs any other reuben-esque dressing contenders - but I have to go walk dogs so I'll look forward to reading everyone's thoughts in archive. [West Coast folks you may not understand the gauntlet I've just thrown down]

Holly, you ought to adopt this album title as your motto. :)

My understanding has always been the difference is pickles/relish in Russian, which is what makes it superior

Uncle Michael:

My Reuben dressing is mayo with relish, catsup and horseradish.

I remember Stereo Total! They did that Eurovision song, too. French singing in Germany, great show.

Ike:

Hmm, I'm listening from a friend's place and her computer speakers sound OK for music, but terrible & muddy whenever a DJ is talking, like the DJ is in a heavy cardboard box. Same problem for all shows. Fiddled w/settings but can't find source of problem. Maybe a connection is loose somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
davex:

I'm not entirely sure, but it could be the heavy cardboard box.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
Gary:

I like to work inside the box, Ike
