Dave and Michael, welcome! Be right back with some fresh coffee ...

My mucho-talented costumer sister just costumed a Bollywood film, shot in L.A., which I guess isn't that uncommon anymore.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Gary:

K.L. Saigal was a huge superstar -- Lata Mangeshkar says that, as a girl, she dreamed of marrying him. Good thing she didn't: He was also quite the alcoholic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Gary:

Some of K.L. Saigal's biggest later hits were composed by this guy, Pankaj Mullick ... but here he is in his own voice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Gary:

DW Griffith was the guy whose name slipped my mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
davex:

Fascinating early stuff, Gary. That poster is by the way actually for the later Telugu film of the same name (hence the Telugu writing, which looks quite different).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Gary:

Oh, thanks, good catch, Dave
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Gary:

This song is from Raj Kapoor's first film, before he teamed up with Shankar & Jaikishan
Avatar 7:30pm
ndbob:

This is great Gary - haven't heard very much of this early material
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
davex:

I wonder how many actors ever sang in their own films, something that does not happen very much if at all today.
  7:30pm
Doug Schulkind:

Gary, my mom listened to one of my radio shows back when I was in college. On that show, I played this long, amazing nadaswaram duet, and she hated it. She never tuned in again, and that was back in 1980.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Gary:

Everyone did in the 30s and part of the 40s, Dave
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm
Gary:

@Doug: She knew what she liked (and didn't) :)
Avatar 7:34pm
hyde:

this is great, I don't know any of this stuff at all. I'm reminded that I have seen far, far too few Bollywood movies. (True confession: the only Bollywood movie I've watched this year was Veerana: Vengeance of the Vampire)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
davex:

Thanks, Gary - an early case of modern specialization, apparently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Gary:

Some of the people who went on to be big actors: Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis (who was more of a character actor, but ubiquitous) both sang their own stuff in the early 40s -- I was gonna play some, but decided to dial the dork factor down a wee bit :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Gary:

Hyde, I need to see that vampire movie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
davex:

And there are so many movies out there to see...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm

this playlist can double as a must-see list, I suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm

You could spend some time viewing the films from just 1 decade!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Gary:

I can vouch for all of the films in this particular set, Dave, definitely
Avatar 7:40pm
hyde:

@Gary it's pretty entertaining. It has great sets and creepy lighting. Has a Bappi Lahiri soundtrack, too. Supposedly the Ramsay brothers are remaking it in 3D.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
listener james from westwood:

heh, i recognize that bed music!

ah, finally here's one I know. love that Geeta Dutt.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Gary:

This one goes out to Doug -- happy birthday!
Avatar 7:51pm
hyde:

@Gary I got the disk from Netflix. Mondo Macabro put it out a couple years ago. They've remastered for DVD a few other Bollywood horror flicks over the years, but this is the first one I've seen. I need to get to work on some of the others....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
davex:

It's easy to find many of these films on YouTube, but few of them seem to have subtitles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Gary:

Thanks, I'll see if Netflix Streaming has it, too!

Welcome, Forestriver!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm

The funny thing is, most of the Indian restaurants I've been to in NJ play not Bollywood tunes but schmaltzy Subcontinent-influenced piano-driven Muzak. I'd gladly go for the music videos!

You wouldn't think so from this song, Michael, but the film is devastatingly depressing (in a good way, though)

Once again, I have no idea where I'd have ever first heard Bollywood cuts famous and obscure if I hadn't been introduced to WFMU. (Maybe in the opening credits of "Ghost World," but I'm not sure I would've seen that film had I not been an FMU lis'ner.)
