Favoriting June 17, 2014: Same Time, Next Year: the Coney Island Edition
Since 1989 I've served as MC of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. This Sat., June 21, represents my 25th year behind the mic. It's hard to believe I've been associated with a yearly event that long. But then I look around and realize I'm involved in other yearly events, too: the WFMU Fundraising Marathon and the WFMU Record Fair, for instance. And every year for almost ten I'm in Louisville in March and Dallas in August for work. I generally don't think about yearly events until they sneak up on me. And I don't otherwise encounter the people with whom I share these events. I'm curious to hear which yearly events you're part of and whether you see those participants outside of the event. And I'd love to know what keeps you going back year after year. We'll also talk about your favorite amusement park ride.

That's why I love Winter Solstice. There's about 2 hours of daylight, but you know you're on the upswing for the next 6 months!

Isn't Bayone really close to Jersey City? Also, I believe Bike Kill is an event where people get together and do really insane things with bikes, build crazy bikes and destroy bikes. Seems wild.

I've tried to make the IBJ Xmas party an annual event, but so often it coincides with my Grandfather's birthday. Also the record fair and volunteering for the marathon come to mind...maybe I need to get some more interests other than wfmu.

Mike East:

yes, bayonne is right next to JC, I believe. The exit I get off to go to Jersey City is actually for Bayonne.

Greg from Bloomfield:

@Mike: The IBJ party coincided with my birthday, so I used to celebrate at Maxwell's every year. The Hoof N Mouth is probably my favorite annual event...

I look forward to soaking Andy during the marathon every year.

i know of this milestones of which this kid speaks. it's just in a big open field in harpersfield ny. actually a real thing with good bands and a lot of stoned/drunken/puking kids. music is sort of jam band-y, kid's birthday was just a convenient excuse for his father to throw a party. i've been to one of them, and it was really for the hippy adults, not the kids.
