You see a blanket on the ground. It's your favorite color, smooth and soft. You can sit on it, or lie on it. It's a flying blanket, and you are the pilot. You are in control. You can fly anywhere you wish, just by thinking about it. You are the pilot.

there's been an embarrassment of great angus maclise stuff coming out over the past year or so, what with this sub rosa record and the boo-hooray discs. it has made me very happy, and substantially less wealthy.

In the same vein as wondering about getting flags enhalfstaffened on the occasion of one's death: I remember hearing Vin Scelsa muse at some length a few years back about what sort of recognition might make one a shoo-in for a New York Times obit.

I think the subject came up partly because a few days before he'd ended up discussing that question with someone particularly concerned with that aspect of his own posterity - perhaps Jonathan Schwartz, although the details are lost in time.

Xltrs & low power calls are as "real" as regular ones, but use a different naming convention & aren't required to ID by call. I used to listen to W276AQ, which IDd as "Juke Box Radio".
  11:07pm
phat:

was maclise authentic?
  11:07pm
Robert:

The low power calls start with W or K (geographic), then have the 3-digit no. for the FM channel they're on, then 2 letters which are assigned in lexical order, starting with AA & theoretically ending with ZZ.
Avatar 11:09pm
MikeY:

Its a rADIO SHOW WHERE IS THE MUSIC? JUST SAYIN
  11:12pm
Robert:

MikeY, I remember when Mr. Bodah took a really long mike break with a guest in the studio & started to back announce a long set that had in it a title that was absolutely filthy. He managed to stall long enough to just "forget" about it, heh.
Avatar 11:14pm
Ike:

But Dan is right that translators are of a sort of lower class in the "caste system" of transmitters. They cannot originate their own programming and can only re-transmit another station; and if a "real" station moves in, translators are not entitled to any protection & will fall like pawns.

Speaking of lower-class, look Y the cat just dragged in....
  11:15pm
Robert:

Heh...at the time I listened to W276AQ, I was an Arbitron diary keeper, and the 5-character call didn't fit in the space for call sign on their form.

I had an experience at that same venue in Moscow with Tibetan music. They were playing the same repetitive thing for probably 10 minutes and I was totally conscious but thoughtless, a trance maybe. I only became aware that this had been happening (both the music and my state) when they changed the rhythm and thought returned to me.
  11:18pm

Ike, unless the rules have changed, low power stns. don't have to fx as xltrs & can have unique programming.

Yeah, that's true, Robert. I was just talking about translators (specifically the ones w/the naming convention you described), not the relatively new LP phenomenon.
  11:46pm
Robert:

So what you wrote was true BY DEFINITION. Xltrs are those stations that repeat a primary station. But in some cases, the xltr is the true primary, and the listed primary is an excuse for the xltr!
