If it's not questionable, it's not aesthetics, it's PR. If it's not ambiguous, why bring morality into it?

From Twitter feed @BkPirateWatch late Mon. night, about Haitian pirate that interferes with FMU: "...some music in English on 90.9 pirate now, incl. profanity-laced hip-hop then Shania Twain (!), but DJ speaks Haitian Creole." "...Then back to hip-hop in French/Creole on 90.9 pirate... & now playing Greg Bates, a mainstream country artist (!!) (?)". Tweets failed to add #almostIrwinStyleFreeForm

If this is the English 18-year-old singer, I think she spells her (stage) name "Birdy".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm

@Ike: if Irwin does his mic break in Creole, the pirates might get confused into changing their frequency

@Ike: be careful what you wish for, Ike. The FCC would be much more interested into giving WFMU's license to a religious/corporate donor than into going after broke pirates. Their teeth are sharp enough, they're just not using them in this case

Hi Irwin and fellow travelers. Nice review of the new disc in the Times this week: tinyurl.com...

Robert:

I haven't checked since, but when I junked my car in Nov. 2008, for about the preceding 2 yrs. there'd been an English-Caribbean (Jamaican or whatever) commercial pirate station on 91.3 whose QTH was somewhere around Burke Ave. in the Bronx. ISTR one person I recognized from WFMU who was featured on one program of this station's once. Hard to blame people for taking all the exposure they can get.
  3:25pm
P-90:

Hi DJ Irwin & commenteers. @ IKE sorry to hear there's just no relief from the interference form the unlicensed Haitian insurgents. I'm imagining what Joe Frank would make of the pirate radio problem. He'd do a show about tracking them down and confronting them face-to-face. Obsessively, but ultimately with hesitation and trepidation...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
Ike:

Fred, I know of no precedent of any such FCC behavior nor anything even remotely like it. Non-commercial stations are in much more danger from their owners (usually colleges selling to outside NPR chains or holy rollers) than from govt. And no, the FCC has few teeth for pirates. Rarely if ever even seizes equipment as far as I know -- or needs overly complicated arrangements w/local police to do so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm
Ike:

Robert, yep, heard that one from the G.W. Bridge in the past. Haven't gotten up there lately. OK, back to work, see y'all later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm

Long live the Oxford comma.

P.S. Fred, re: "broke pirates," no, they have $$$. Listen online to Radyo Independans (easily Googled) -- you'll hear ads. Tweet the above w/details if you can comprende the ads or any phone #s given out.

LP FM:

@fred: What you've heard about happens more to noncommercial Low Power FM frequencies, on what used to be the Class D radio license. These small radio broadcasters are threatened with having their frequency revoked, if a corporate or churchy regular broadcaster challenges them to the FCC. WFMU is a full power station, so aren't at risk of that. And like Ike said, regular noncommercial stations are most threatened by their owners selling them--Ken F. and Auricle Communications keep us safe from that outcome.

  3:52pm
LP FM:

@P-90: I doubt WFMU has the multimillion dollar clout and political connections Clear Channel/Infinity/religious networks have to bully smaller outfits with the FCC's back. In fact, IIRC being on the bullied end of a WFUV frequency fight was a major cause of our long-running feud with them (Boo! Hisss!)

  3:58pm
P-90:

What Ike said about the Feds having to coordinate seizures, prosecutions, etc. with local law enforcement makes sense too; that might support the idea that you've gotta have a lot of commercial clout for it to be worth going after a local bootlegger on your behalf..?
  4:01pm
Robert:

It takes some doing just to gather evidence to make your case you're being interfered with. Before the turn of the century, there was another, less bothersome pirate on, I don't remember, maybe exactly 91.1 operating only at intervals. As close as I could determine from driving around, it was somewhere around the NE corner of Parkchester -- Castle Hill & Tremont Aves. -- probably several stories up with vert. polariz'n. Ken appreciated the info but explained they didn't have the resources to pursue it, because of what it takes.
