Favoriting Bryce: Playlist from August 15, 2014 Favoriting

I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

i've always been tempted by the littleBits/KORG Synth Kit, where you build your own analog synth.

indeed.

Sphere, LittleBits is pretty cool. Interesting filtered through a Microbrute too.

@ Chris thanks! might give it a try sometime.
Avatar 12:59pm

if you want a fun toy to play with an have $150 bucks, the littleBits synth kit is a good price for an intro to generic synth noodling.

going very deep down on this, sooooo good, B.
  1:13pm
P-90:

@sphere, steve, whosondephone, etc.: Moog now sells an excellent little built-it-yourself analog synth, the Werkstatt-01. It was originally the project designed for the synth building workshop given at the "Moogfest" convention, but its such a nifty, really usable starter analog synth that musicians wound up recording and performing with it, so they've marketed it through Moog dealerships. Worth checking out.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
stefica:

how nice and bell-y!
  1:30pm
P-90:

@coelacanth: It's way cool, isn't it? the Littlebits Synth kit costs about half as much, but the Werkstatt is like a real Moog synthesizer, and the perfect analog synth for teaching how they work and what they can do.
Avatar 1:31pm
Bryce:

hiyiii
Avatar 1:34pm
Carmichael:

Uton. Sounds like udon. Now I'm hungry.
Avatar 1:37pm
steve:

theres a lot to like about the littleBits Korg, Werkstatt, Bleep Labs, etc. but i can't hang with spending hundreds of dollars on gear with exposed circuit boards, flimsy little jumper pin connectors, no standard way to interface with Midi and CV. this stuff will die if it leaves your studio and significantly more robust products that could last a lifetime are just a little bit more $$$. i used to be pcb design contractor for one of the aforementioned companies, ive spent a lot of time with this stuff. i'll take an Arturia, C&G Pocket Piano, Korg Volcas, a used Micromoog or other similar priced underappreciated 70s/80s synth, or even a little Meeblip over any of em.
  1:45pm
P-90:

@steve: OK, the Arturia is a sturdy, road-worthy piece (WITH a keyboard) at an unbeatable price, but is the Moog really that flimsy? It's been reviewed as solid enough to be usable in the studio and at gigs...?
  1:48pm
nic:

love this !!!
Avatar 1:48pm
Chris from DC:

Yeah, this really is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
fred:

@steve: I don't play them myself, but I have a fondness for some of these 80s synths. I know someone who uses a Teisco from that era, and I really love some of its sounds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
common:

good to know, steve!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
coelacanth:

hear a jake brake!
Avatar 1:59pm
steve:

yes. the jumper wire thing which is the patching system for the Werkstatt is just hook up wire headers made for prototyping. its gonna snap and get stuck in there. you can already see it bending in Moogs promo photos. you bend that enough, it snaps. inside your $300 synth.
  2:00pm
P-90:

Photography is permitted but DON'T leave the vehicle
  2:02pm
P-90:

@steve: Thanks for the professional perspective. It's still a cool kit to build at home and learn analog synths from the inside out, right?
Avatar 2:02pm
steve:

sorry... no more synth ranting from me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
coelacanth:

ive never used a synthesiser or computer for my noise (unless you count a 1991 casio keyboard,or the digital effects of my recorder) but it looks fun. I'd like to use one to process outside, analogue sounds.
...i'd only get one if a decent used one comes my way ,cheap. ..or if i win a lottery.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
coelacanth:

DCE i'm sorry- i'm oblivious enough to not know what that means!..But i think it's more the opposite.
i use "field" recordings & "play" instruments, and things; and use the effects in my 8-track recorder.( & 3 pedals)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
DCE:

well, it is what it sounds like, and you don't need anything other than a small mixer, some cables, and some effects pedals. Just use one of your Outs from the mixer, chain some effects, and then go back IN to a channel. Experiment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Do they give you those coloured crocodile clip jumpers? Those are appalling!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm

i was a bit lucky, my mom and dad used to play lots of king crimson, bowie, kraftwerk, the occasional amon duul 2 when i was growing up -- and, plenty of Floyd, Zep, Moody Blues, etc. "Elephant Talk" is my earliest musical memory, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm

when i got into "punk rock" my mom was not a happy camper. That never changed until after i moved out.
