Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Besides guitar, Thomas accompanied himself on quills, a folk instrument fabricated from cane reeds whose sound is similar to the zampona played by musicians in Peru and Bolivia

1) the pedal steel tonality in the midst is almost unique
2) I thought I heard a couple of instances of two notes bending at different rates. A slide guitar with a B-bender COULD do that, but they'd have to be pretty damn good.
I'll give it a cynical listen looking for fakery. But my on-the-fly ear says it's a pedal steel, probably a Zum, Franklin or Emmons (modern guitar, not a 60s honky-tonk hero)
