RE: The USA LP (etc.)- I've been delving deeper into this particular period in American pop lately. There's a definite 1967-1968 style period; mostly not quite there in '66, evolving into other things by 69.

Also: Sergio Mendes, Burt Bacharach, Herb Albert hugely influential on pop (not rock) in 67-68.

@ P-90: if you've not explored it yet, I recommend The Assiciation's 'Birthday' LP from '68! Perfect psychedelic sunshine pop!
...it's odd & interesting: bubblegum emerging in those years, Proto-Metal, return to 'Earthier' stuff after Psych
...& a lot of 'classic' Garage Rawk was later than I think - retorgressive even in its' context...Most people who like Psych like Garage & the other way, & the overlap intrigues me...
'68 was notably Political & uneasy in a particular way...
quite a few pedals did not exist yet
flanging/pasing was done manually with tape machines, produced random results and needed a lot of editing afterwards.
All the physical technical equipment changed rapidly in the 60s - from 2-track recording to 16 in five years! - along w/ the drugs & everything else...
Prog arguably a product of psych bands that had been doing a lot of improvisational jamming and went back a to their roots in more disciplined, structured pop songwriting. And very much originally a mainly London thing. (Yes at Marquee club etc.)
- yeah - Prog = Rawk 'taking itself seriously' as Art - & themselves as Musicians & Composers &tc. The real 'Concept' of 'Concept Albums' was the Medium itself - the Album as one thing & as Jim Morrison said replacing the painting or novel for this particular culture...

Procol Harum - "In Held 'Twas in I" at 17 minutes or so, in '68, was pretty unheard of back then, too! Kind of a forgotten cornerstone track for how 'prog' music would evolve.
V priceless: Procol Harem was absolutely there at the dawn of prog, also Van der graf Generator was way ahead of their time, arguably the most "avant-" band at that time, they managed to anticipate early-mid 70's prog, mid-late 70's Bowie and Ferry, and even 80's dance-pop, at a very early stage of the game.
Yeah, the Beatles ran far away from "Pepper", then soon ran in four different directions! But I submit that early McCartney solo songs ('medley-style" songs) like Uncle Albert/Sgt. Halsey are very proggy and again "enabled" prog-pop like Elton's "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" and "Roundabout" by you-know-who, both longish multi-sectional songs that charted big-time.
To the Prog-Haters - I do maintain that playing well & having ideas did not preclude making good records also ! (Sometimes.)
...I also maintain that the Ramones were Art - Pop Art of the highest order of Genius: very carefully Designed & extremely well-informed. (If ti's 'Art Rawk' - define 'Art'.)

Also the "extended intro" version of "Sweet Jane" from R&R Animal ('74) is absolutely prog, "stealth prog" if you just don't associate "Lou" and "prog" at all...
