coelacanth:

i bought a comp album in the late70s or 80s called "year of the ear". i wonder if it is connected to that magazine. (i don't recall the mag, even though i'm an old geezer)
i don't remember why i bought it,but it introduced me to television and Tom Waits.
Avatar 10:36pm
Dave Mandl:

Pretty sure it's not related, but sounds good!
Avatar 10:39pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Renaldo and the Loaf are always great.
Avatar 10:40pm
Dave Mandl:

@Bronwyn: Very true.

greyhoos:

Yeah, I vaguely recall EAR magazine...seeing the occasional issue floating around, sitting on the record shop rack alongside the likes of Forced Exposure and Option.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
coelacanth:

it's in storage or i'd look at it now.
it's good though.
...my older brother made fun of me for liking television.
(actually he made fun of me for liking punk rock.)
Avatar 10:41pm
Dave Mandl:

@greyhoos: Right. Tony Coulter was an editor there. I wrote for them sometimes.

You had me at Beat the Water!
Avatar 10:48pm
Dave Mandl:

Hey, Michael. Thanks.
  10:51pm
greyhoos:

@Dave: Wow. Knowing which now makes me wish I had picked up a copy or two back when. But then again, I was living beneath the arse of nowhere at the time, had no way of finding much of the music the mag covered, and probably (at my age, then) would have found the thing impenetrable.
Avatar 10:59pm
Dave Mandl:

@greyhoos: It was kind of highbrow, but they covered lots of great music.
  11:16pm
cheri:

i'm enjoying the show very much, dave! great tunes!
  11:17pm
greyhoos:

@Dave: As I remember. A lot more "academic" in its bent. As opposed to FE, which was cover to cover deep-insider proto-altrock scenester Joe Carducci-ish attituduinal gonad flexings. And then Option, which aimed at being semi-highbrow, but often suffered from a wildly uneven pool of contributors.
Avatar 11:18pm
Dave Mandl:

I always thought Option was kind of overrated, but don't tell anyone I said that.
  11:20pm
cheri:

thanks dave!
  11:22pm
Linda Lee:

.. 'attitudinal gonad flexings' .. !! fantastic.
Avatar 11:25pm
Dave Mandl:

@Linda: Agreed.
