Live Performance by Matt Bauer with Jeff Hudgins

Using his whispery-raspy voice and a banjo, Matt Bauer creates beautiful, thematic albums filled with tales of death and mysterious circumstances. Bauer embellishes these song cycles with an ensemble of chamber music players. On Matt's newest, "Dream's End," a sci-fi scenario unfolds, in which the protagonist is described as "(breaking) himself apart to find wires and circuits and a body made of glass and gold." Matt Bauer along with clarinetist Jeff Hudgins performed some of these lovely new tunes live.

...home from the local & Irish Trad & but one pint of Guinness which cost too much
in time to appreciate all of the show. A good Tuesday...

Thanks Herb. I think it's just our in-house radio that's funky.

91.1FM is fine here in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Slight static but nothing worse than what I normally get.

I'm late. Hi Irene. Welcome back. Thanks for having Julie in last week, what a show she and Nath Ann had!
  10:10pm
JakeGould:

…And now after I posted that, 91.1FM seems dead or interference filled in Bay Ridge. I jinxed it! Oh the humanity!
  10:13pm
JakeGould:

Wait. Never mind. All fine. My bad. Was set to 91.2FM instead of 91.1FM. Oh woe is me!

@JakeGould Do you have some kind of European radio?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm

Whew! I was just about to bother Station Manager Ken about it. It think it's nothing to worry about.

Internet signal is awesome.

@Folsom: I have no radio in the bathroom so it’s not European.

Folsom:

@JakeGould Normally radios in the US only tune to odd multiples, I figured you had an import radio.
  10:24pm
JakeGould:

@Folsom: It’s a Sony radio so perhaps I need to tune it in Kanji?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Mike East:

@Folsom - I always thought that was because FM is in stereo and the odd frequency broadcasts the Left channel, the even carries the right. That could be completely false, though, just something I heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Mike East:

Though I guess if that were the case, JakeGould still should have received something tuned at 91.2...unless it would be at 91.0...I dunno. Carry on. Enjoying the music. Great Aimee Mann, that.

My 1995(?) Onkyo receiver has 91.2

Irene, you saw RLJones at Ethical?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Irene Trudel:

Van, glad the internet is going strong. Mike, that's really not the case with left/right channels on radio. However, back in teh early days of FM, some radios were made with the intent that AM would broadcast one channel and FM the other. Didn't really work and was quickly abandoned.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Irene Trudel:

Bklyn Kid (and others), do you remember those Fisher "magic eye" tuners? They had this green light with a cone near the bottom. If the cone shrank away the station was tuned in. My family had one of those for many years.
  10:57pm
JakeGould:

Those old school Fisher displays were pretty amazing. That odd era before full digital but precise analog in the 1970s and 1970s was great for nice displays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Folsom:

@Irene There is one special magic eye that is kinda expensive. Instead of wrapping around the center, the eye got bigger as the signal got stronger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Folsom:

@Irene You are correct, the normal ones did what you said. There was one radio that had a different magic eye, that one was special.

Listener Robert:

I never understood the point of numbers stations, with the numbers read as audio in any of several languages. Seemed it'd be so much more efficient to send them in international Morse code. All just to save some recipients the trouble of learning code? Well, damn, they had to learn SOME kind of code anyway, huh?
  11:06pm
Listener Robert:

Or if not international Morse, a PRIVATE code of dots & dashes. And not have to rely on human hearing to receive it, either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Tome:

I used to laugh when my $9.99 Emerson radio could get this station Pat Duncan and my neighbor's $300 ie.. Pioneer Stereo receiver could not and was still noisy in Mono even,, the tuner was only good as its antenna ,, if you relied on the wire that came with the receiver you had only the "strong" stations ...
Avatar 11:06pm
Van in DC:

I wish I could be in a position to donate the large amount to FMU I used to be able to. But 0bamacare socialism has completely wiped out my ability to do that. I have to now pay health care costs for illegal aliens. My costs have gone up astronomically under this idiot and his socialism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Mike East:

wouldn't socialism be if our healthcare was provided by the government out of our taxes? I pay a shit ton of money every month for shitty coverage from a corporation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Irene Trudel:

Cool, Jake! Thanks for that Magic Eye link. Robert, who knows the mysteries of spying. But many theorize it was some way of transmitting code that someone understood on the receiving end somewhere. In any case, when i was a kid with a shortwave radio I found they were entertaining to listen to. And, Yes, Tome. Radio reception is only as good as the antenna connected to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

They say the thing about number stations is - the numbers could represent anything - not a simple alphabetical equivalence - therefore the simplest way to convey something impossible to decode. I was just thinking - as the interwebz has probably replaced shortwave - think of all the ways you could convey code online...

  11:29pm
Bklyn kid:

ppl in DC, they put an antenna up in their van, they might get droned out. Not that it would be a bad thing.
  11:30pm
Listener Robert:

When I was a kid & tuned in to numbers stations, at 1st I thought they were nx anmts of winning lottery #s or some such, figuring I'd missed some preamble. But eventually I heard them open their carriers to launch right into the #s, then close them.

But the point is that voice is so inefficient a means of xmitting such info. I heard plenty of hams sending c.w. that once I was told the #s stns. were spy xmisstions, I thought, how silly of them to not simply use c.w. And they were doing it in English, French, Spanish, German, etc. I mean, the #s are the same in code in ANY language. Or as I said, they could use c.w. for any code, just xlating directly from dots & dashes to whatever their code book said. Better to have a machine to receive as well as xmit, then you don't have to have humans learn either code or use their frail ears to hear it in spoken language. The data could've been sent so much faster. It seemed like some silly child's idea of playing around pretending to send coded info.

Avatar 11:34pm
Van in DC:

Please elaborate Bklyn kid. What do you mean by your comment exactly?
  11:38pm
Listener Robert:

Not sure if the kid meant "droned out" as in stalked & shot by an armed aerial drone, or "drowned out" as in overwhelmed w signal.
Avatar 11:39pm
Van in DC:

The former I'm sure. And I take offense. I have a feeling I touched a nerve with illegal alien reference because, well, ahem.
