Simply put, he was to 20th century classical music (conducting, composing, performance) what Lemmy was to metal. I'll have to listen solemnly tonight to the piano sonatas, maybe one of the orchestral works, his Stravinsky. Damn.

If I got it right (?) - Boulez was involved w/ the opening of the Centre Georges Pompidou - which seems symbolic enuff of his place in Modern Music & Culture. He championed Zappa's orchestral works - altho' I read Zappa wasn't 100% enthused about his conducting of them...awwwkward...
