it's prolly bad that i feel like hooping every time i move my head, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Doug Schulkind:

God damn do I miss Curtis Mayfield.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:57pm listener james from westwood:

There was a photo that went around Twitter recently of Moe, Larry, and Curly with their Stooges makeup/hair off and their serious poses made them look like a 1930s personal-injury firm.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:58pm listener james from westwood:

glenn, that might be where the writers on Deadwood got the term "hooplehead."
Avatar 5:59pm glenn:

i think hoople means square, or at least that was the discussion last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Gary:

Howdy!
Avatar 6:01pm ndbob:

evening Doug and everyone!
Avatar 6:01pm glenn:

oh, and it sounds like the deadwood movie is really going to happen, although i don't hold out hopes that it will be much good.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:03pm listener james from westwood:

@glenn: Yeah, it's one of those things that easily could get really screwed up. At this point I'm fine with the Brigadoon-like miracle of three seasons being all we get if it means they don't release shite product.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Doug Schulkind:

This song is more like Badd Badd Badd!
Avatar 6:04pm glenn:

oh man. i just had a visual image of brigadoon set in deadwood, with deadwood's characters AND IT WAS REALLY GOOD.
  6:04pm Dean:

Went through my mom's 78s this past weekend. Nice little portfolio of Billie Holiday, and tons of Frankie Laine. Also, some weird once-popular theremin recitals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Howdy Dean and ndbob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

My pops saw Billie Holiday live. He has no short-term memory left but he can still remember seeing Billie Holiday in the late '40s.
Avatar 6:05pm glenn:

wait - frankie laine played the theremin? that explains a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Yo ho ho, to you, Gary!
Avatar 6:06pm glenn:

oh, speaking of billie, and others, i have something for you drummer. keep an eye on your snail mail box.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Doug Schulkind:

I will escargot to the mailbox and drool every day, glenn!
Avatar 6:08pm glenn:

more than that, i cannot say.
  6:08pm Dean:

Frankie called his theremin "that lucky ol' sun." My folks, too, saw Billie Holiday in SF, not long before 1) I was born, and 2) she died. (Come to think of it, maybe I heard her, too...) She was gone. Dad had to help her onstage.
Avatar 6:11pm Monica:

yo, dougeleh! wow! never heard this version. is this the original?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Doesn't everyone name their theremins?

@Dean
Yow.

@Monica!
Abaco Dream came first (in 1969). Both written/produced by Sly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Doug Schulkind:

Oops, no. The Abaco Dream version was written by Sly but produced by Ted Cooper. This Joe Hicks version was produced by Sly.

Speaking of Sly, keep ears open!
  6:15pm Dean:

Been thinking lately of Pierre Bastien song titles yet to be recorded, e.g.,
Tundra Hard Nut, and one that doesn't quite make it as a palindrome, but sounds great nonetheless: Able Was I Ere I Saw Miami.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Doug Schulkind:

The plot thickens. From Wikipedia:

"Some musicologists believe that "Life and Death in G & A" is actually a performance by Sly and the Family Stone. They note the similarity in performance of this song to other Family Stone songs, and the dissimilarity between this song and other Abaco Dream releases.[6] The song also appears on the CD compilation Listen To The Voices: Sly Stone In The Studio 1965-1970, issued by Ace Records.[7][8] The vocals are attributed to Joe Hicks, who in 1970 performed a cover version for Stone's Stone Flower label."

only you could do all that research and play great records at the same time!

Jeff Golick ...got a job...

So the show can no longer play in the middle of the M-F weekday highway.
  6:43pm Dean:

He should get another job, minister or something, for the sake of the listeners.
Avatar 6:45pm northguineahills:

I need Jeff's problem!
