	10:19pm coelacanth: Cliff, similarly,(sort of) relayer was a gift from my brother (on 8-track tape!) and for a while was the only yes album i had besides "fragile". on saturdays i'd smoke some herb, put headphones on and enjoy Relayer,and try to deconstruct it in my head.
	10:19pm Tome: LOVED the Fragile ,, Close to the Edge yes album yes, ,, then for a long time the Tales,, .. Relayer Yes,, ,, even after that even liked ,, Tormato,, and a lot of stuff after that ,, but I still love this Yes the best ... > bit.ly...

	10:23pm Cliff: My dad had Tales from Topographic Oceans, but no copies of Fragile or Close to the Edge (judging from google image search of the covers). I listened to both and liked Relayer better, so that's what got put on the walkman
	10:23pm coelacanth: close to the edge became a favorite at some point too; but after all these years, and despite its commercial appeal, i'm sure that Fragile is my fave.

	10:27pm Cliff: I used to have the entire 1st side memorized note-by-note, and could recall the whole thing in my head whenever I was bored at school. Great way to get through 22 minutes of a boring class!
	10:29pm coelacanth: what appeals to me most about relayer is the intricate bass and guitar playing, and the seemingly odd time signatures, that seem to resolve into 4/4 & 6/8 signatures if you keep track.

	10:32pm mark Flynn: Relayer is Yes' most over the top album but that's because of the addition of Patrick Moraz who was a technical virtuoso compared to Rick Wakeman, whom in retrospect, probably kept them from going over the top. Hard to believe considering his album "The 8 Wives of Henry The 8th"

	10:33pm Cliff: I have no idea, don't know the first thing about music theory, but the intricacy of the sound of that album is what appealed to me too. It was like space alien music or something, blew my 15-year-old mind. (Also I think Dad was trying to get to me quit listening to nothing but grunge and "alternative" all the time and broaden my horizons a bit, haha)

	10:52pm coelacanth: i knew relayer and fragile and didn't try to hear other yes. i liked it but i 60s revolution music was my focus! then these stoner girls befriended us (at least!) and they were super into yes and grateful dead. close to the edge was their main. ...so i have a fond connection to it.

	11:14pm Michael in Seattle: Supposedly Pandora and such has replaced radio; but i totally disagree. There is so much music out there that needs to be discovered. Or rediscovered.

	11:22pm Eric Hat: An algorithm that actually shares information about the songs it plays... And sounds so human at that!
	11:28pm Cliff: I was born in '78 and during the 80's the only station our parents would let us listen to in the house was the local oldies station* that only played "the best hits from the '50s, '60s, and early '70s!" Late at night I would sometimes sneak a portable radio into bed with me and covertly listen to the local pop stations 93Q and Y94 (yes, my way of rebelling against my parents was rocking out to Madonna & Cyndi Lauper). So, did I miss out on "Real Radio" when I was growing up? I know I've never hear another radio station as freeform as WFMU, in fact it never even occurred to me before I came across WFMU 10 years ago that a radio station would regularly play completely different genres of music or let the DJs play whatever they feel like. * WSEN in Syracuse....I was thinking/hoping just now that it was WHEN, makers of the infamous FCC-banned EBS test jingle (youtu.be...) but some googling shows that they they have an Adult Contemporary format. Well, we weren't allowed to listen to THEM either in the house, so at least my sometime-draconian parents have some good taste ;)

	11:31pm Eric Hat: Ha! I had to sneak FMU growing up through the eighties and nineties! Never knew it would be available world wide one day. True miracle of the modern day.
	11:32pm Michael in Seattle: I'm much older than you, Cliff. So, here in the left coast we had such Free Form radio as KRAB. When FM was new and unfettered.

	11:33pm Cliff: Btw, my parents eventually mellowed out by the end of the 80's and let us listen to whatever we wanted to, so I didn't miss the glory of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" breaking the charts in '91, thank God.
	11:41pm Cliff: Our local college station, Z89, played mostly hip-hop and club music during the day (not that there's anything wrong with that), but Saturday evenings they had a three-hour long show dedicated to "alternative" music where I got to hear things like Stereolab or Front 242 or other bands I would've never been exposed to otherwise. So even our college station here wasn't your typical college station, it had a strict format for most of the day. WFMU and WICB in Ithaca, NY were the two stations that helped keep me sane in college and grad school!

	11:55pm Cliff: Michael in Seattle: Grunge music kind of smashed its way into our rock station, 95X, they just could not resist the overnight success of Nirvana no matter how much the older Djs may have wanted to ;) They still kept playing plenty of classic rock along with it though and even the hair-metal for a while. U2's album "Achtung Baby" and R.E.M.'s "Out of TIme" came out around the same time and I remember both of them too being a huge deal at that station and getting played a lot. But they never played any of the more indie stuff that you'd hear on college radio, except for R.E.M. which was already plenty mainstream by then.
	11:56pm Cliff: So I didn't actually get to listen to what people usually think of as "college radio" until I actually started going to college! :)

	11:58pm coelacanth: Cliff @11:33 i actually never heard of nirvana (the band) until c.1993! i had given up on "commercial radio" in the early 80s and "rock" in general. it revived me in a big way when i heard that.

	11:58pm coelacanth: Cliff @11:33 i actually never heard of nirvana (the band) until c.1993! i had given up on "commercial radio" in the early 80s and "rock" in general. it revived me in a big way when i heard that.
