Aerial View was WFMU’s first regularly-scheduled phone-in talk show. Hosted by Chris T. and on the air since 1989, the show features topical conversation, interviews and many trips down the rabbit hole. Until further notice, Aerial View is only available as a podcast, available every Tuesday morning. Subscribe to the newsletter “See You Next Tuesday!” and find tons of archives at aerialview.me.

This past Sunday, Feb. 14 - Valentine's Day - I finally made it to the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, one of the largest and (some say) best flea markets in the world. It's only open the second Sunday of every month and Janet and I kept missing it when we were in LA. Two days ago we were there in the glorious 85 degree sunshine, trying to take it all in.
Click the pic for a short Rose Bowl Flea video.
Rather than write about it any further, I offer these pictures and this current Aerial View as the document of our visit.
Listen for interviews with guy selling a bizarre guitar; Jerry Nieto, vendor for almost 30 years; Jo, who sold me vintage Valentine's Day cards; Travis & Taren, first-time vendors who nearly didn't get in and Michael Howard, formerly of Brooklyn, the designer behind Smock Me, walking the flea with his pet potbellied big Mr. Meat AKA Hollywood Pig and an Albino Python named Peaches (see the video, below).
I'd say more but it's 2:30 AM in Los Angeles and I need to get to bed.

Last Week: Mortal Coil
Last week's show featured my trip to a wake and musings on the end. You know, THAT end. Here's a comment from "Old Dave" on last week's playlist I'd like to address:
This show gave me pause to think. About my own family and the wider world! I don't understand why the FMU world has dismissed their first and best call in host. Unless none of you have families or give a crap about the wider world, which is basically composed of families... Shame on you all! Unless Chris is in a lawsuit trying to extract $ from the WFMU entity that we don't know about. Never refer to WFMU as "Family" again.
I'm not sure how Old Dave came to the conclusion I was "dismissed". I was not. Travel to the station became physically impossible in the wake of my foot surgery. I wanted to continue doing the show from home but that option wasn't available to me per the station's bylaws and norms. No accommodations have ever been made for those within proximity of the station to broadcast from home. No exceptions were made for me. While I wish I could've continued on the air, taking calls from listeners, it was not going to happen. In the past, when I couldn't be on the air live every week, I've done a podcast. That was Communication Breakdown, mentioned here before. I've even been off the air entirely, for years. I'm no stranger to this situation. But this is different from those other times because I won't be returning to the air when it's all over. I've decided it's time to shove off before much longer. Let's enjoy it while it lasts.

I sit down with the guy who brought me to WFMU, Kaz, to conduct a Q & A all about his new career retrospective, the Fantagraphics book Kaz: From Hoboken To Hollywood. Join us at the Word Bookstore in Jersey City. This discussion will become an Aerial View show, so come on out!
