This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hey Flashstrap. I was so excited when I found your show and I usually end up listening to archives when I can. I have actually been discover os much more of GTDR (and Ichiban) this week. I don't want to try to figure out how to split up my pledge between the couple dozen favorite DJs and plus the ones I might not know about or appreciate yet. But I did want to let you know that I appreciate your show. Thanks. Have a great marathon.

When I was first exploring WFMU and not really paying attention to which show I was listening to an Emerald Web number was one of the first songs to grab my attention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
listener james from westwood:

@Flash, Mom adored it. When she first heard "Quiet Village," she didn't get the name or composer, so she called radio stations to whistle it and see if the DJs could ID it for them. She played Yma Sumac and the rest for me from an early age and told me, tongue in cheek, the Amy Camus fable re: Yma when most of my friends were still playing with Fisher-Price toys. When they began coming out with the Ultra-Lounge series and they had that Exotica one, it was a lead-pipe cinch for her next birthday. And she of course dug it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm

@bob: haha! Mine would not have played Yma either. My dad was the music explorer in my family, but my mom did buy us the original recordings for Hair and JC Superstar which I loved. When I asked her recently what inspired her, she couldn't remember. Maybe a relative who was into musicals.

@Flash: I already had free run of the B'way and movie LPs, but for some reason never put one of those on. So one day she did.
This all made for odd chats with fellow students. They'd be all like, "What's yer favorite record?" and I'd flash back to the previous night when I did my homework to Gordon Jenkins's "Manhattan Tower."

and Jeff -- well said. i also was somewhat familiar with lounge/exotica/library records, but not all that much. i've learned a lot from this show, and have started to look for lounge/exotica records on a more regular basis ... library records would be nice to find, but they aren't all that common 'in the field' around here...

Oh and people should really get in the running for that "Science if Fiction" DVD from Criterion whenever its on the block. Its EXCELLENT. 3 Discs and a really nice thick booklet.

To be sure that your pledge is credited to Explorer's Room, you must:

(1) Pledge by clicking the PLEDGE NOW button on this page.
(2) Make sure "Explorer's Room" is selected in the program drop-down menu.
(3) Click the + (plus) button where it says CLICK TO ADD SHOW.

To add to gary - if your a Swag for Life member and are confused if you will be "double billed" etc, Joe McGasko is on the case and he rights all wrongs. Just make sure you put the amount you want from your overall total and choose "One Time" not per month. Also, choose "send me a bill". Joes Soldiers will handle the rest.
