Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Artist Track Approx. start time

Another year has passed since the untimely demise of Richie Shulberg in 2009. Time to pay homage to the fiddle wizard's alter ego, Citizen Kafka. We celebrate his memory in song and tasteless humor culled from The Citizen Kafka Show on WBAI many an age ago. As always, Irene is joined by celebrants / co-conspirators Edward Haber and Kenny Kosek.

Good evening Irene & listeners!
  9:06pm
Listener Robert:

You managed to get a selection that honored the memory of not only Citizen Kafka, but that guy who composed the Mr. Softee jingle.
  9:06pm
Listener Robert:

I didn't see you'd already noted that in the playlist, sorry for the redundancy. Sorry for the redundancy.
  9:07pm
kevlicki:

Enjoyable medley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
Irene Trudel:

I updated it to be redundant, Robert. And Hi Melinda and kevlicki!
  9:08pm
WebHamster:

Merry Shulcoth!
  9:17pm
WebHamster:

Yes, Ed, it is pronounced Waasss. I used to have a 5" demo reel of commercials from Waas Block Productions!
  9:18pm
Listener Robert:

I forgot who here 1st played "Songs for Ice Cream Trucks" by Drink Me, but I came in in the middle of it and, WFMU's signal fading a little, I assumed from what I heard that the Mr. Softee jingle was derived from an old folk tune called "Drink Me". I even told my friend Nadine that.
  9:20pm
Tim:

My favorite Mr. Softee ripoff was the Philadelphia-based Mustafa Softee. Sadly, its jingle was not the call to prayer.
  9:21pm
Listener Robert:

I'm easily mis-convinced of reverse sequences of events like that. Steve Post played some recorded harpsichord compositions claiming them to have been baroque predecessors of later tunes, but admitted the joke after he'd played their cover of "Erie Canal". He could've fooled me, though.
  9:23pm
Kate Borger:

So happy to celebrate Shulcoth with you here in Pittsburgh, PA (where Jeff Berman now resides). Will you have a chance to play "Nothing"? It's so incredibly smart and funny! I remember sitting on the floor of the NInth Avenue WBAI studio during the Kafka show. Thanks for that wonderful opportunity and memory! (And early Happy Birthday to Ed.)
  9:23pm
WebHamster:

Free music store '80s version was at PS 41 - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10209082555086804
  9:24pm
Listener Robert:

Then there was the time I played some Croatian records for friends, and they informed me one cut was "Buffalo Gals". Like when Jackie Gleason didn't know "Swanee R." on "The Honeymooners".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Irene Trudel:

Glad you're able to listen in, Kate! Unless Ed has a version of Nothing without frank language we won't be able to play it.
  9:26pm
Marty Cutler:

Hi, Y'alls! I remember the 69 Bar gig very well.Chaos it was in Shulkie's capable (or culpable) hands. The PA system was a nest of wires surrounding all of the players, after Shulkie got there late and hastily assembled a lovecraftian rat's nest of cable. I don't recall if it was the same gig at 69, but I recall Haber bringing in a rack of digital recorders, which were somehow threatened by a minor flood of water from spilled water bottles.

Ia! Ia Shulkie!
  9:27pm
Listener Robert:

Now I feel deprived, because I never heard a dirty version of "Nothing".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Irene Trudel:

Well, Ed says none of WWST's versions of "Nothing" were explicit, so here you go.
  9:30pm
Kate Borger:

Thank you!!
  9:30pm
JakeGould:

Ahh… “Nothing∏” such a perfect Yiddish song.
  9:31pm
kbudjones:

I tuned in just in time. Nothing!
  9:32pm
WebHamster Henry:

Kafka used to have a disheveled pile of scribbled lyrics for Nothing if he felt like doing an extra long version.
  9:32pm
JakeGould:

And “Nothing” is based on the Yiddish song/joke with the same tune called “Potatoes” and a Google search brings me back to… Last years playlist!

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- so The Fugs were just one in a tradition. I learn something. About Nothing.

Finally I got my (your) playlist running. Awesome show!
  9:41pm
WebHamster Henry:

Ed was always there recording everything ! Thanks so much Ed, without tape who would believe it?
  9:43pm
Marty Cutler:

Long before I was in Wretched Refuse, I was playing pedal steel and guitar with a guy named Bob Gaster, who lived in a church in Brooklyn. I left the pedal steel at his place, since I didn't have a car, and the steel is a shlep and a half. I came to a rehearsal one day, only to find the pedal steel in some tuning that was not of this earth.

Bob Gaster explained it: "I was jamming with a guy named Richie Shulberg, and he played steel; do you know Richie?"

Scraps deSelby:

Sad about Mr Softee jingle writer dying. My ex Ellie knew the words and would sing it with little provocation.
  9:52pm
Marty Cutler:

I believe that "Marching Down Broadway" was an Alan Kaufman tune. I was the banjo guy on the cut you played.

Hey Marty! Call back. I picked up the wrong handset.

It think it was Kafka at the Eagle Tavern, reading the "Choking Victim Heimlich Maneuver" poster to the tune of Secret Agent Man.
I have to say, it was sometimes hard to convince him to leave the stage.
Sadly, the number of Crazy Guys is somewhat diminished these days.
