You decide.

1.35pm DW Robertson (formerly Ergo Phizmiz) - Morton Feldman Optimized for Time 1 & 2 / Morton Feldman Optimized For Time - The King of Denmark

Three compositions by Morton Feldman, with the air taken out. If the old adage goes "Music is the space between the notes", we propose spaceless Feldman to throw a proverbial spanner in the works.

DW Robertson is a writer, composer and collagist, who used to be known as Ergo Phizmiz.

1.45pm Jem Finer - Shortplayer #3 (4VB)

There are several layers of optimisation going on here : The system of composition is an optimisation of Longplayer's algorithm in which various variables have been changed, notably the duration, which is reduced to 14 minutes and 30 seconds, and the instrumentation - two tones, a bleep, a piano chord, a piano note, three voices singing a singing bowl and a couple of tuning forks - which is itself an optimisation of course, of all possible instruments.

I allowed the algorithm to play itself out and then optimised the result, by way of editing out some of the more unpleasant instances of bad playing. If humans were obeying the score one would hope that they would listen to each other and self-edit. So I had to step in and set the computer right.

The singing bowl was sung by Olivia Chaney as an experiment to see if human voices could “synthesise” the sound of a singing bowl. To this end she sang three of a bowl’s overtones. This was the first stage towards performing Longplayer with nothing other than the human voice (well, around 500 human voices !), a project that is still in development and will hopefully be first performed in 2018.

Jem Finer is an artist, musician and composer. Since studying computer science in the 1970s, he has worked in a variety of fields, including photography, film, experimental and popular music and installation. Recent work, focusing on his interest in long-term sustainability and the reconfiguring of older technologies, includes Spiegelei, a 360-degree spherical camera obscura, Slowplayer, a 3 r.p.m. sound system and Supercomputer, a sculptural machine composing minimal musical scores.

Can the camera person get a nice close-up of the paintings? And thanks so much for the intriguing entertainment. I never knew what was coming up next!

Yes, It's been an interesting concept, having these short shows: rather like a tasting menu!

hi from the charming northern california bay area!
Vicki, can we download segments from all 5 days , later on? is there a page or link set up? you were great with John last night at Monty Hall... all week has been so wonderful, the programming and shows and talent - too good for words! I'VE BEEN A PLU FAN SINCE 1998 OR 1997.///// these last 5 days have been so inspiring and I'M EVEN MORE OPTIMISTIC, NOW! ---- from collage filmmaker: lori varga in Oakland, CA ( where JOHN is from! wow!)))

hello all, the audio archives will be here as long as WFMU is here (I'm just finishing time-stamping each show start at the moment, they are up for the previous days)
The performance at Monty Hall will go on the WFMU Vimeo page sometime pretty soon, and I will embed on the playlist page here www.wfmu.org...
And we've also embedded a few video links already for some other shows. Ken's video archive from Wednesday may or may not go up, we will see and..
we're making this thing into a documentary :) which we will also embed on every playlist page and the main page too at wfmu.org/playlists/up
Many thanks all, hope we can do this again some time!
