This Aerial View features lots of "Nat Sound" (or "Natural Sound" as it's called in the radio business) I've gathered over the years, either while on assignment for NPR as an Audio Engineer or in my Aerial View wanderings. This is stuff that's hard to classify but worth hearing. Here's a rundown:
9/11 Church Bells, New York, NY, Sep. 11, 2002
Recorded on the first anniversary of 9/11 in downtown Manhattan opposite Ground Zero, this was something I found while archiving audio on my computer.
Street Sound, Hoboken, NJ, May 2003
A little snippet of sound from Adams Street, the block on which I lived in Hoboken for almost thirteen years. It was a loud block.
Coyotes, Hollywood, CA February, 2004
Kaz and I up in the Hollywood Hills in a house once owned by Linda Ronstadt. I step outside to grab some natural sound, hoping to capture Hollywood coyotes.
Loud Party, Hoboken NJ, March 2004
If memory serves, this was a St. Patty's Day party around the block from where I lived. I was walking home and was so impressed by the amount of noise coming out of this ground floor apartment that I had to hit RECORD.
Manhattan Street, New York, NY April, 2004
This was recorded either going to or coming back from a remote sound-gathering assignment for NPR's New York Bureau, where I worked for many years as an Audio Engineer.
Thanksgiving Party, Brooklyn, NY, Nov. 2005
Tom Clark is a talented musician and bartender whom I met through my friend Jim. For years Tom threw an incredible Thanksgiving party in Brooklyn under the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge. The focal point of these epic parties - besides the copious food and drink - was the basement studio where an endless jam session would unwind into the wee hours. Here's an a scorching take on Pleasant Valley Sunday featuring Tom on guitar and Jody Porter (Fountains of Wayne) on guitar and vocals.
Mermaid Parade Warm Up, Brooklyn, NY June 2006

Loud Assholes, Hollywood, CA, July 5, 2013
July 5, sometime around 11 pm, while visiting Kaz in LA, a car full of Hollywood Assholes pulled into his driveway and proceeded to blast their radio and act out like the exhibitionists they clearly were. This was recorded through an open window.

With the Zoom H2N recorder I recently picked up at the Meadowlands Flea Market the seller was generous enough to include an 8 GB SD card (and batteries) and when I got it hooked up to my computer I discovered he'd left a bunch of songs on the card, too. Considering how easy it is to delete recordings on the Zoom H2N I'm curious as to whether he wanted me to hear his music. Here are the two songs he practiced over and over. I have no idea who this person is and I doubt you will either. But these songs are something. He's obviously very angry at a woman who did him wrong. Listen with an open heart as he opens his and BLEEDS FOR YOU.

Last weekAerial View brought you a WFMU Aircheck show from 2003. Maybe you caught it back then or managed to hear the archive. Maybe not. It was a fun show to put together and I thought it deserved one more go.
The Mermaid Parade
On Saturday, June 18 I will once again serve as "The Voice Of The Mermaid Parade" from a podium in front of the reviewing stands on Surf Avenue, Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York. This will be the 34th Annual Parade and my 27th consecutive year as MC. The Mermaid Parade has become a New York tradition and has to be seen to believed.
I began MCing the same year Aerial View went on the air, 1989, and to see what the parade has become is truly impressive. We've had attendance as high as half a million people and it's essentially an art parade. The creativity on display is something to behold and I urge you to get your ass down to Coney Island early on parade day, even though things don't kick off until 1 pm. Grab yourself a viewing spot near the PA and you can hear everything me and my co-horts will be saying about the acts you'll be watching.
