Anyone do anything cool for World Goth Day? Can't say there was much of anything to do in the suburbs.

I wore black, and listened to some Jesus & Mary Chain. Other than that the day just didn't feel too gothy.

@slugluv: Like Julie said, every year it's May 22 since 2009. (I actually think the weekend part this year threw me off, it kinda snuck up on me and I didn't plan ahead).

Hungarian! Transylvania-adjacent! ;)
Avatar 12:18am

thank you, Julie!
hah! i was cat sitting that day for a number of different kitties; aside from bats, are there any creatures MORE Goth? (the ones here insist that cats are even MORE Goth than bats)
yup, Hungarian! did you know that Transylvania used to be located in Hungary?
Avatar 12:20am

Black cats make a wonderful "familiar"! :)
Yep, the Hungarian half of Austria-Hungary. Hungarians from Transylvania are known as "Szeklers".

ah! thank you Matt, did not know about "Szeklers"!

@Matt I think that was a point you brought up a couple of comments boards ago regarding the 1990s and music.
Avatar 1:00am
Matt from Springfield:

The 90s were amazing for dreampop/goth/metal releases, almost all of which I first tuned into after the fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00am
coelacanth:

i rarely heard Irwin through the entire 90s, because of my work schedule.
i will definitely seek more Boo.
Avatar 1:02am
Matt from Springfield:

@CS: Yes, originally from one of Scott W's shows, on good years of music and whether there are "bad" years--I stated that there are no "bad" years of music, every year will have something amazing in some genre. But thinking to 1990, some years are indeed "thin" on good music!
Avatar 1:04am
C.S.:

I know Meghan had said grunge ruined music. I wasn't a fan either. Discovered college radio way late in the game but like you, found many great songs and artists from that time after the fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06am
coelacanth:

i wonder if i could've met David Bowie. the day after i ran into legal trouble with my livery license (which lasted 3 years) one of his guitarists asked me to be his driver.
Avatar 1:07am
C.S.:

I was thinking of a Mistle Thrush song the other day and couldn't believe it came out such a long time ago. Wish I caught this stuff the first time around.
  1:08am
JakeGould:

The problem with grunge is it opened the door to tons of lunkhead metal and really drowned out the softer indie stuff… It did—in it’s own way—open the door to more “twee” pop thanks to Kurt Cobain’s advocacy and smaller labels like K and Kill Rock Stars being able to finance smaller bands thanks to larger bands, but hey… The circle of life!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09am
coelacanth:

i was driving toward out of fmu range, but what i heard was great. i will get that book - after i move.
Avatar 1:10am
C.S.:

Grunge seemed to be the response to a dying and hokey late 80s music scene. I heard people say it was more honest but I felt they threw out the baby with the bathwater so to speak by wanted to divorce themselves of synthesizers and other great 1980s elements.
  1:12am
JakeGould:

@C.S.: What drove me nuts about grunge is how many musicians and fans I knew who would use the popularity of grunge to dump on synth music and say things like “Well, I’m really making real music by playing a real instrument…” or something along those lines… And sometimes that would be said—and is still said—in opposition to rap and hip hop. There was a little bit of redneck in some if the grunge world I cannot abide by.

Getting my Tamaryn fix.
Avatar 1:14am
