Hi, great sounds so far
Have to mention what sounds like a great jazz show tonight in NYC with an international cast (hope I can get to it)... The Anat Fort Trio with guest Gianluigi Trovesi, at the Rubin Museum NYC. I've seen Fort, she's great, have always wanted to catch Trovesi, maybe the rest of my life will permit...

Guitar is such a cool instruments, so many different ways it can sound. Slide guitar here, I presume.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am
Mike East:

I thought it sound more like a pedal or lap steel doctorjazz - though I won't contest the statement that guitar is a cool instrument that can sound many different ways...also I could be wrong and maybe it was slide guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am
doctorjazz:

As could I...it did have the sound of a bar sliding on the strings, whichever it was.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am

Thanks Little Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am
coelacanth:

maybe i am the fool here, but a pedal steel guitar is usually played with a "slide"; and slide guitar is not an instrument but a style of playing. this would make a pedal steel git a form of slide git...making both of you correct! (if it's a pedal steel.)
Avatar 11:13am
ndbob:

morning Meghan and everyone!
Avatar 11:13am
chromaphone:

yes, lap steel guitars are basically guitars played horizontally but a pedal steel... now that's a different beast. I didn't know which track you are talking about but it was probably lap steel. It is called pedal steel "guitar" though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am
coelacanth:

chroma - both are played with a slide though, typically, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am
Meghan:

morning ndbob!
Avatar 11:19am
chromaphone:

@coel - yup, always. "slide guitar" is a vague term but usually means a regular guitar played with a slide.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am
coelacanth:

aha. so my statement above is only correct on a technicality!...and from the viewpoint of diplomacy maybe!
(and, i wasn't listening that closely to the track so i have no opinion as to what it actually is! ...i was cooking, across the room.)
Thanks.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am
Doug Schulkind:

There appears to have been a problem with the FMU website or at least the playlist system. This playlist (and Marty McSorley's over on the Mothership) stopped accepting new song info and comments at 11:19.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am
coelacanth:

so, as you can see them - maybe you would delete the redundant ones so they don't appear on the archive?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am
coelacanth:

...anyway, Thanks Meghan. Excellent program!

tchau
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am
doctorjazz:

to get a bit more technical, you can play any steel string guitar on you lap and have a "lap steel" if you play it with a slide. There is, however, a guitar built as a "lap steel", which has the strings much farther from the fretboard, and is thus very hard to finger and play without a slide. And, a pedal steel, of course, is only played with a slide.
Great show, thanks Meghan, lots of fun (good company on my dog walk as well as home).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am
doctorjazz:

To get a bit more technical, you can play any steel string guitar horizontal on the lap with a slide and have a "lap steel", but there is a purpose built lap steel guitar with strings much further from the fretboard, which is only played with a slide, to far to finger chords and noted. A Pedal steel is a bit different, and only played with a slide.
Been a great, fun show, listened at home and just came back from dog walk, good company there as well. Thanks.
