Hi, Liz. Did Matt leave you with sufficient snacks or beverages today? Or just piles of crumbs and empty cups strewn haphazardly?

Is it Brit for zucchini?

I remember running across references to "mangel-wurzel" in some Wodehouse books and being all, wha?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I vaguely remember eating at a restaurant that offered courgette dressing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
mariano:

Yeah, it's Brith for Zucchini. Just like aubergine is Brit for eggplant. I learned about courgettes when cooking with some British friends years ago and I mentioned how my recipe called for zucchini, and they gave me one of those looks such as only Brits can give Americans!

Hello!
Avatar 1:22pm
ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

@mariano - I lived in St Louis, Missouri for a short while. You would cringe at how mid-westerners pronounce some of the french named towns there. For example, Creve Coeur is pronounced "creeeeve core"
Avatar 1:23pm
Cecile:

yep! We Upper Midwesterners also mangle ferrinn languages purty bad, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
mariano:

Oh, I've lived in the Midwest too -- Omaha, to be precise. I kinda like how each part of the country has its own local mispronunciations you have to learn to blend in. Norfolk, NE, for example, is pronounced Norfork, and Beatrice is Bee-AT-triss. French names always get the worst of it though: Des Moines, Detroit... And, in my home state of Louisiana there's a town called Natchitoches -- three guesses as to its phonetic pronunciation!
Avatar 1:28pm
ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

@Cecile - I was so obsessed with learning french in high school and getting my pronunciation right. If I said those town names in proper french while living there I would have been so laughed at!

Michael 98145:

there is an arrogance in ignorance
Avatar 1:30pm
Cecile:

I know! Same thing with me and Spanish for a while.
Avatar 1:30pm
ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

@mariano - Oh boy, I don't even want to guess on that one! I lived in Concord, Mass and New Englanders have their own language too when it comes to town names like Worcester, Peabody, Maynard. I had a professor in college from Maine. HO boy, was it hard to understand him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
mariano:

Trying to imagine how Peabody can be anything but Peabody! Natchitoches is pronounced (not kidding) "NACK-kuh-dish." It's kind of famous as the town where Steel Magnolias took place. But yeah, the deep New England accents are really something!
Avatar 1:37pm
Cecile:

I've heard it as Peh-beddy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

If anyone can pronounce this town in central New York state, you're a better pronuncer than I am: Skaneateles. I have no idea where to begin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
Michael 98145:

sounds like a ska band :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm

Oh wow, Ken, no idea. NY state has some great ones: Shawangunk, Ronkokoma... and Peh-beddy, that's weird!

FWIW, some helpful Australian listener pointed out the other day that "Chook Race" is pronounced like "Book Race." I was pronouncing it like "Fluke Race" before that.

Is this Charlotte Gainsbourg?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm
Liz Berg:

ah hell, the tracklist is all outta whack!
Avatar 2:36pm
Jeezy:

Oh no! In the time that has passed since you played that track I had a sizable portion of my estate diverted to Henry in honor of a track designated "12 Ate." To undo this will require tremendous effort and expense! :-/ Why, Liz, WHY?!?!!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
Liz Berg:

@Jeezy: I figured it out! One of my less-than-careful DJ compadres slipped a different CD into the Henry Kaiser case. WHYYY??? The track was actually by Thor & Friends, and actually titled "12 Ate." Sorry for the mix-up. These people are out to get us.
Avatar 2:41pm
Jeezy:

Oh no! But I was so impressed I purchased the $899 Henry Kaiser box set from Amazon after that amazing track!
Bahaha... JK... Thanks for the clear-up Liz! We shall fight on another day!
