This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

ah, Zamfir. i remember the tv ads for this guy from when i was a kid.
Avatar 7:13pm

Avatar 7:13pm
Flash Strap:

Welcome Scraps and happy to have you with us
Avatar 7:16pm
Scraps:

when i worked at a record store in the 80s (Peaches in Seattle), I learned about Zamfir, one of those artists that lots of people came in asking for but not necessarily knowing his name.
Avatar 7:17pm
Scraps:

thanks Flash Strap
Avatar 7:19pm
Flash Strap:

I might never have gotten into him if I hadn't gotten so into Picnic at Hanging Rock, but that film just locks the music into such an evocative place of the mind
Avatar 7:25pm
Flash Strap:

in a minute I think I'm gonna play another cut from that Phillipino missionary LP with the wacky cordovox

so, uh, GET READY TO GO NUTS
Avatar 7:25pm
Scraps:

apparently, though a generation knows zamfir through tv ads, he's a world-class master of the pan flute, with lots of classical credits to his name
Avatar 7:26pm
Scraps:

like boxcar willie
Avatar 7:28pm
Flash Strap:

yeah, he's the real deal.
Avatar 7:29pm
hyde:

yeah, i totally don't get how zamfir ended up in the 70's tv commercial scene with Roger Whittaker et al
Avatar 7:32pm
Scraps:

Very fast Brazil!

Hi Flash and all!

Ray's films are great. I like The Chess Players and Distant Thunder a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm

Based on the tracks you're spotlighting, this Charulata soundtrack is indeed gorgeous
Avatar 7:43pm

Hi LD!
Avatar 7:43pm

hey, Little Danny. that Halloweenish 45's show last week was amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Little Danny:

Ah, many thanks Hyde, glad you caught it. I love Halloween and Halloween music so much
Avatar 7:45pm
Flash Strap:

it was amazing, LD
Avatar 7:46pm
Flash Strap:

I need to see more Ray films. Music Room is one of the ultimate music films, though
Avatar 7:48pm
hyde:

yeah, I like The Music Room a lot. Caught that one on Turner Classic some time ago.

I'm in my first week of a Turner Classic-less existence after my move, and i'm not taking it well at all.
Avatar 7:50pm
Flash Strap:

oh that's rough. sorry to hear it man
Avatar 7:50pm
northguineahills:

*Finally checks the playlist*, huh, it was that Zamfir, very different from the soothing New Age sounds I remember being pedaled late at night in comp cds a good 25 years ago. The stuff you played was actually really good!
Avatar 7:50pm
Flash Strap:

wish I had a date on this record
Avatar 7:52pm
Flash Strap:

Hi NGH! yeah that record is tops, really really solid music. I can't speak for any of his others, but that one is the real deal, especially the opening track which is all-time Important
Avatar 7:59pm

excellent first hour Evan - catch the rest later!

Thanks for playing calming sounds. It's helping me not panic (as much) as we approach the possible end to our long electoral nightmare on Tuesday. I've been a live wire all week.

re: the soothing sounds - My pleasure folks

Some good Emil Richards work on Windham Hill as well
Avatar 8:37pm
Flash Strap:

this record has some truly crazy sounds on it. so underrated
Avatar 8:38pm
Scraps:

the second French, Frith, Kaiser & Thompson album was on Windham Hill. Weird.
Avatar 8:39pm
Flash Strap:

huh, I should listen to that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
melinda:

@Flash: I missed the first hour, who did the music for Picnic at Hanging Rock?
Avatar 8:39pm
hyde:

@scraps huh, that is odd.
Avatar 8:41pm
Flash Strap:

i don't know about all the music in that movie, but the main theme is the first Gheorghe Zamfir track I played tonight
Avatar 8:42pm
Flash Strap:

haha those sleigh bells
Avatar 8:42pm
Scraps:

and a late, very good Janis Ian album, God & the FBI, was on Windham Hill.

I'll stop now.
Avatar 8:44pm
Flash Strap:

man I guess I should explore Windham Hill a bit more thoroughly before I cast aspersions, it plainly contains multitudes
Avatar 8:45pm
Scraps:

no, no, not really!
Avatar 8:45pm
hyde:

fun fact: Zamfir also plays pan flute on The Karate Kid soundtrack
Avatar 8:46pm
Flash Strap:

yeah he totally does! that is a very fun fact!
Avatar 8:47pm
Scraps:

it's mostly new age, when you pronounce it to rhyme with sewage.
Avatar 8:47pm
Flash Strap:

oh this part is really cool
Avatar 8:47pm
Scraps:

Windham Hill, that is
Avatar 8:49pm
Flash Strap:

it really is mostly the kind of new age that leans more on acoustic guitars and celtic harps than synths, and aims to dumbly soothe rather than transport. I do not like most of it at all
Avatar 8:51pm
Scraps:

again in Seattle in the record store in the 80s, Windham Hill was big among a crowd that you could spot walking in. Lots and lots of George Winston moving.
Avatar 8:51pm
Flash Strap:

it's the perfect music to play if your goal is to make me picture an idyllic english forest in autumn, but you need me to hate doing it. Windham hill that is
Avatar 8:52pm
Scraps:

William Ackerman founded it, and while he was good, he was fond of many lesser guitarists
Avatar 8:52pm
Flash Strap:

I mean, Shadowfax has merit, esp. with emil Richards onboard, but I don't really like it
Avatar 8:55pm
Scraps:

My roommate liked Shadowfax, but he said the later, Windham Hill stuff wasn't that good. I haven't listened to it
Avatar 9:00pm
Flash Strap:

I just scored this one yesterday. Haven't listened to it too closely, YET, but it's pretty great I'm pretty sure

Terrific show; love the Tony Williams Lifetime stuff
  3:43pm
Flash Strap:

Thanks Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
Gary:

Just FYI Bombay Talkie is a James Ivory satire about Bollywood, and not Bollywood itself, although Bollywood does have a long history of pretty clear-eyed / satirical self-referentiality. But I think everyone involved, including composers Shankar & Jaikishan, were winking at a different audience than usual ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
Gary:

^And apologies for the totally unasked for mainsplain-fest there, but Little Danny's comment got me thinking about *why* the music is so different from Bollywood generally!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
Gary:

*mansplain .... going back into my hole now ... seriously, thanks for the wonderful show, Evan!
  4:40pm
Flash Strap:

I'd call that just a regular, very welcome friendsplain! Thanks for filling me in a little bit, I've always been curious about it but I'm hopelessly unschooled on Indian cinema so I don't even know where to start with analyzing a soundtrack. Though a basic google search probably would have helped me sound like I knew at least a little bit what I'm talking about....

HAVE to see Bombay Talkie now, though.
