Huh...I thought Ms. Trudel was having a sub in tonight. Maybe it's only her photography that's playing hooky.

Irene Trudel:

Hi All! Tis I as usual in the chair. Had a late afternoon dentist appointment, so no time to find a good photo today. Maybe as the show unfolds.

Listener Robert:

One frustrating thing about moving from the Bronx was that I'd just found a good & fast dentist who'd do the 2 root canals I needed for $850 each -- and would even fill one of them instead of an artificial crown -- but I had to move and needed the $ for moving. And now that I'm in NJ I have to find doctors & dentist all over again.

Another huh: That's supposed to be an actual nature photo from Crater Lake? It looks like a painting -- and the vegetation in the foreground looks especially like artwork, depicting various fanciful figures near its top.

@herb: that's a great tribute cd. Bob Mould and Graham Parker are especially good.

Oh, too bad Robert! I just found this latest dentist through a friend. While I like him tremendously-- very gentle and reassuring-- the out of pocket expense is not what I need right now.

But let's not talk about teeth. Hope this picture works, even though it does look like a painting. Somewhat enhanced, I suppose, but pretty.

Good to hear, Mark! We may have a show in Monty Hall with them next spring. Linda, I'd always thought that about Bridget. She certainly has a better vocal range than Nico.

Here's what a critic said of Ackles: "Alternately calling to mind Hoagy Carmichael, Irving Berlin, Robbie Robertson, Tim Hardin, and Scott Walker." I tend to agree.

Funny. I was aware of Terry and the Pirates (band, not the comic strip) from following John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service, but never would have guessed it had something to do with this Terry Dolan song.
  10:27pm
don:

Ackles released 4 albums, 3 on Elektra, 1 on Columbia. Stacy Sullivan, a well-regarded cabaret performer, has a show devoted to Ackles centered on his 1970 Troubador appearance with Elton John on the bill. Taupin revered Ackles and produced 'American Gothic', on which Ackles's epic 'Montana' appears.

Do you mean that you don't like Nico, coelacanth? Because I usually don't bring up that I despise Nico, but if I have a companion, that would be nice ... if I'm wrong, um, never mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
coelacanth:

2015 was at least nearly as bad.
...i know this year has sucked royally for me, aside from the loss of so many famous people that meant something to me; but at least i haven't lost any friends or family to a fire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Irene Trudel:

Carmichael, don and Andrew, I've always loved David Ackles style of singing/playing. He's slightly out of tune but in a good way. And i love those orchestrations. don, I will definitely have to check out that Stacy Sullivan show Hi melinda, Scraps, Rev. Rabbit-- and anyone I haven't mentioned yet. Finally getting back on track.
  10:34pm
don:

You have to check Stacy's schedule: she has done the Ackles show 3 times so far @ the Metropolitan Room on 22nd St. His 'Down River' and 'Road to Cairo' are classics.

Scraps, haha! i like some Nico; but i have 4 of her albums and really never want to listen to a whole one through.
- and "the end" album is pretty awful, all in all.
...so, despise? no!
- and i know it's fashionable to like Niko at wfmu! if i was concerned about what others thought i wouldn't admit to Loving radiohead!

Oh. I just think Nico can't sing -- like, she hits the wrong notes. Makes me cringe, even apart from her disconnect from the music (to me).

Well, the rain hasn't turned to snow tonight in these parts. Not yet, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm

I haven't heard this One Truth Band record in years. I have the lp but I haven't thought about it. I just pulled it out to remember who the singer is (Fernando Sanders). I got it from a cutout bin for $1.99 in '81 or '82. The Shankar violin sound is great.
  11:06pm

1960s West Coast painter John McLaughlin is amazing when you see it in person. Like Rothko, you can't really reproduce it in a photo.

I've always wanted to listen to John McLaughlin while looking at McLaughlin

Irene, that's exactly what i would've done in response to the comment board Nico talk!
...and the marble index is my favorite; and to be fair - i do listen to the whole thing through occasionally, as well as chelsie girls....it's just been a few years.

Scraps:

I usually like artists who polarize. To me, she she's a singer who can't sing. I can't get around that. And when I dig deeper, her personality is ugly (racist). I know that sometimes great artists can be shits as human beings, but my first exposure to her was negative (VU with nico), and then I read about her afterward.

Anyway. I'm not going to screed anymore. But I wasn't reacting to her because she was polarizing, I think.

Irene, thanks for the David Ackles, one to hear him, two to play a track the length of Montana Song. Been listening to him since '68, does not fade.
Might have mentioned this before, I proposed to my wife after playing 'House Above the Strand' from Five & Dime on Colombia. Still together.
I like a crack in a singers' voice eg Phil Ochs, it is what they have to say that counts.
