Stane Getz was an unpleasant bastard, but he sure could lick that stick.

Working 2nd shift now, so no more archives for me. I will be LIVE, to get me thru my work-night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm

Hi Hyde! Getz's early records are some of my fave bebop. That tone!

If you were on w/drawel from heroin all the time, you'd be an unpleasant bastard as well, Doug ;)

Hmm, I don't think I have ever read or seen a single Stan Getz interview, and I think that explains why.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm

True dat, northguineahills.

@Doug: do tell - is there a personal encounter somewhere in there?

In another life, I'd like to play vibes. And with little foundation, somehow think I'd be more suited to that instrument choice than many others. Cuz in another life, I can just say it's so.

Was just thinking the other day about unpleasant bastards other musicians worked for -- Benny Goodman, James Brown...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Little Danny
Indeed there was. Saw Getz perform in a smallish but famous club in D.C. in the late '70s/early '80s. Stood front and center stage while soloing, but then remained there, mugging with audience members while his bandmates were soloing. They were clearly miffed, but betrayed nothing while the boss was facing them. It was the rudest thing I ever saw on a bandstand. He deserved a cymbal in the back of the neck.

But there is that story of Benny Goodman refusing to agree with the movie studio to portray the black members of his orchestra as waiters who happen join the orchestra rather than professional musicians.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

Man I'm so glad to hear that ifny. My normally low tolerance for xmas music has been replace by an absolute disgust with it this year

Heard Joel Grey interview the other night talking about his dad, Mickey Katz, who'd been with Spike Jones also doing his own Yiddish adaptations of Home on the Range and all kinds of things. Perfect maybe for a Danny or Uncle or Drummer to dig into...or maybe been dug already.

I've been thinking about last week's discussion of winter music, melancholy & cool vs. upbeat and warm, and now that it's 7.1 degrees outside I'm really appreciating the hot tunes.

Bob James sounds rather different here then he did w/ Robert Ashley.
