Welcome back, Dave. A most unexpected treat as I'm laying here
I'm laying here immobilzed by a wtf leg injury.

GreatSociety's version sways like a cute young figure - the Airplane's is all chemical nerve endings.
Avatar 10:12pm

Tempo of the original StL feels sluggish, the JA version had urgency. What Rabbit said.

howdy Dave & everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm

The Great Society just wasn't anything like the Airplane. This has always seemed an interesting curiosity that underscores that point.
Avatar 10:14pm
Dave Mandl:

This Somebody to Love sounds better than I'd remembered it, but still doesn't touch JA's.

Worth noting that pianist Ben Sidran made his bones in the early Steve Miller Band.
Avatar 10:24pm

i have not spent quality time

Avatar 10:34pm
Dave Mandl:

"Take the Money and Run" was a pretty low point IMO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Rob W:

A note on the last set: Minimal Compact’s members were actually all Israeli, but based in Europe - first Amsterdam, then Brussels where they hooked up w/ Crammed Discs. Berry Sakharof from Minimal Compact has gone on to a very successful solo career back in Israel - some of his stuff is quite interesting, worth exploring. I particularly recommend his collaboration with Rea Moshiach, “Ibn Gabirol” (set to texts by the Sephardic poet of that name; tinyurl.com...). Recently the band has done a few reunion concerts / short tours including in 2016.
Avatar 10:37pm
HollyT:

It occurs to me that there was a time from about 80 to 83 when a lot of 70s rockers were trying to put out quasi-new-wave records
Avatar 10:37pm
Dave Mandl:

Thanks, Rob. Yeah, I discovered them through the Crammed network back in the '80s. A good friend of mine also used to know Malka Spiegel, who was (is?) married to Colin Newman.

Oh yeah. I'm fine. I'm walking home with two slices of pizza and the guy just was hunched and ranting to himself and rammed me. I didn't fall down. The pizza survived. Most importantly I got to shout, "Whoa! Whoa! What the fuck you asshole!" And get past him.
