In case anyone's wondering, today's playlist image is a still from the 1977 film "Riddles of the Sphinx": www.youtube.com...

Oh, and the film's score is by Soft Machine's Mike Ratledge!

Carmichael:

Pre-hello, Tony. Enjoy the snow up there last week?
Avatar 11:59am
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Carmichael!

The snow itself was dandy. The snow melting all at once as temperatures abruptly rose was a pain -- it led to multiple leaks in our basement.

this Anemic Boyfriends cut is a bit different though, since you didn't hear US bands using a reggae rhythm as much as British DIY acts. Great track, Tony.

The Anemic Boyfriends were from Alaska, of all places.

That makes them even better. Going to dig into those guys.

As far as I know, they only released two singles. Don't like the other single as much.

They use a toy instrument I had as a kid. I "think" it was called the pixaphone (as opposed to the pixiephone), but I could be totally misremembering that.

The Colleagues and now The Antlers are names that remind me of the silly days of inventing ad hoc bands to play single performances, a.k.a. insta-bands. We had Sweet Puddin'heads, Goddamn Tractor, Arbor Day (lasted a few gigs), Hula (formed to bid farewell to a friend taking a long trip to Alaska), Shit from Shinola (faux-country)...

@Dean: There was an Ann Arbor band that kind of did that. They were the Watusis, but they had a different name modifier for each gig, e.g., The Buck-Naked Watusis.
Avatar 2:32pm

That Donna Summer track is kinda disco via Kraftwerk, of course....
  2:33pm
Dean:

We weren't so much "a band" as a bunch of bored 'teens too cool (i.e., chickenshit) to rebel. My musical talent is microscopic, but my friends actually do have skill. They were usually forgiving of my shortcomings.

Donna Summer was Moroder, of course...right?
