Good question, Ken -- just looked it up, and apparently one greeting is "Habari gani?" which is Swahili for "What's the news?" but then the answer depends on the day of the week and the particular virtue associated with it.

Speaking of undead, hear the story about the tourist from Washington (state) here in NYC that got a steak knife stuck into the base of his skull by some crazy street dude? The guy pulled the knife out of his own head, walked to the police station, and was later found to be completely fine at the hospital. No way this guy's not a vampire, or maybe a Highlander type.

This Will Austin and Jason Jay Gillingham effort is a trippy headphone song. I think that must be what it's made for.

Thanks for your field work Liz! I think you should do this all the time. I loved your recordings from Spain too. Did you know there was a guy at AMNH whose job was to convert old field recording of frogs from tape to digital? I saw the room he was in and it was floor to ceiling of old audio reels.

Apropos to potential terror attacks at holiday markets, ‪a guy in Union Square told me they banned feeding squirrels because one jumped on an old lady once and she died of a heart attack.
  1:36pm
Listener Robert:

Mariano, regarding the knife in the skull, a lot of brain damage is subtle. You can knock out various parts of the brain, never notice it, and have it be difficult to even detect with testing. Of course being lucky helps a lot too!

@Robert: true, that's some scary stuff, head injuries in general. @brendan: found it, it's Jim Wilson's "God's Cricket Chorus" but I'm reading now there's some debate as to how much the recording has been manipulated. Why can't anything just work out?

Barney Grubbs:

yay violent change!
  1:53pm
JakeGould:

I met someone who worked in the Bellevue ER on weekends. She said pretty much all she saw were drunk a-hole injuries. BUT, she noticed a pattern: Dudes who had some kind of head injury (like falling and conking their heads) generally became calmer and nicer when they recovered. Like family and friends would notice a difference.

So I guess their is something positive to be said about conking dudes on the head.

A long time ago I sat on the grass in Madison Square Park in NYC (when they allowed you to do that). It was in the fall and I was eating lunch. Sorry to hear about that, Jake, happened to me once too, 25 years ago or so. Shaun, there was a show on FMU a while back where the DJ would play tapes he'd find in thrift shot bargain boxes, some of them reel-to-reel, really old. Anyone remember what that show was? There was a hilarious one of some kid whose voice was changing singing along to Rod Stewart's "Tonight I'm Yours" while he kept banging on the high E string of an out-of-tune guitar.

@Mariano I've seen the horrible pit of sweat, it's in a little shed where they have a treadmill hooked-up to a rusty transmitting machine. They run these slaves until they keel over dead. Those on-off delays in broadcasting are the times between slave replacements.
  3:00pm
Listener Robert:

Mariano, the intro to "Audio Kitchen" contained a clue to "Lost". I'll explain in a minute.
  3:04pm
Listener Robert:

"Audio Kitchen" opened with a sound collage including a passage with a child saying how the tape recorder worked, and when it was set to record, you didn't hear it playing back as the reels spun. "Lost" had a scene in which Walt was talking backward. Re-reversed, he said, "Push the button. No, button's bad." Later we were shown a 2-track tape recorder used by characters on the show. Walt must've recorded on the wrong track, "Button's bad" meaning it was set wrong.
