I didn't see the New Yorker article, but I was at NJ PAC for a different show when she was at the main stage. We had time to watch her on a TV monitor in the lobby for a while, and she didn't do much singing for a while, just strutting her stuff (which I suppose she's entitled to do...)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

I don't trust the 1958 date on that Oscar Perry. But the shitty/quaint use of echo (referenced by Little Danny) suggests '58 could be true. Any thoughts?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr. C
That's what I see, too. But '58 feels a bit early. I've also seen a 1960 reference.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:50am Brian in UK:

Doug, was this Stevie album the one where the letters fell out the front cover?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Little Danny:

1960 feels right for the Perry. That side was directly referencing "I'll Take Care of You," a charting 45 for Bobby Blue Bland in 1959

as far as i know he is, melinda and brianUK; i think he's on the road, likely hoping to beat this storm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

Yes, our dear brother listener ndbob is moving from Indiana to Athens, GA. He will remain ndbob and not become gabob.

Howdy, burke. The Senators deserted my twice. They became the Minnesota Twins in 1962 and then the Texas Rangers in '72.
Avatar 10:59am annie:

i kinda got used to indybob, though, i wonder what he'll do.
Avatar 10:59am Scraps:

@βrian: did he maintain that rap was not music?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:00am Brian in UK:

@βrian some say that jazz is a syn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Parq:

Hi, all. In all of my Gil listening, I've never heard the title track from "Pieces" before. Thanks for playing it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am melinda:

ndbob would still work as a handle, since it's rather cryptic if you don't know the origin.

Could mean "non-denominational bob."

@Lewis
Nice observation. Belafonte was a huge star when this was recorded, so not so outlandish a thought!
Avatar 11:08am annie:

there are always buskers outside the Earthfare here and i hear some pretty amazing vocalists; i heard one on wednesday that tore my heart out with her soulful voice. i wonder, doug, if you've ever thought of a show full of newbies and indy singers. she would be a fine candidate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Parq:

βrian, I remember when the media thought that disco was a type of rock music. For instance, a magazine articles about Studio 54 might include the sentence, "ordinary citizens are kept waiting in the cold all night while celebrities and the glamorous dance to the rock music inside."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
The best "rain" songs are songs that have the sound of rain in them.
Avatar 11:18am burke:

Whoa, great slowed-down version...eat your heart out, Freddy Fender.
Avatar 11:18am Scraps:

@βrian: I'm 52. I lived through disco. Disco had good and bad, like all genres. Shrug.

@Annie-Music teacher was what got me into jazz as well, had tried and not succeeded until I had a college course on Jazz History. Of course, having Chuck Israels (bass for Bill Evans) as teacher, with a substitute teacher like Lee Konitz (who brought his horn and did lessons on electric Miles) didn't hurt. Of course, I didn't yet know who these folks were when I took the course

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Jeff Golick:

@Scraps: looks like they're going full digital instead of refurbishing their aging FM broadcast infrastructure. Makes a certain kind of sense, I guess, though I do cry for those driving cars with no digital capabilities.
Avatar 11:32am still b/p:

National Norway radio operations going digital for what they regard as better clarity and reliability. Local stations will be out of it a few years later. But for a few reasons not everyone's thrilled, will have to get converters "...two million cars in Norway — a country of just five million people — don't have digital audio broadcasting receivers."
