A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

affordable? my premium for a policy with a 6k deductible is 500 a month. that's for one person. call it what it is... by force of law my premiums and deductibles allow the working poor free healthcare. these people do not HAVE health insurance, they were GIVEN health insurance. big difference.

Don't blame ACA for rising costs. Health care costs more than tripled between 1990 and 2012. Hyperinflation is a complex topic in healthcare but one thing universally agreed on was that the initial effects of ACA were to reduce the rate of inflation.
Avatar This Is The Modern World with Trouble Hellraiser 2024 9:53am
Planet Tyler:

@Terry - Really? I mean I agree it looks like 1933 Germany in many ways. Didn't know that thou. Damn AND RIGHT - ACA hasn't caused rising premiums - is everyone's memory so short that they don't remember it rising like crazy every year anyway? ACA at least puts a limit on how much of the premium can be JUST profit

@TerryNB: how do you tease apart ACA & inflation? is it inflation that causes an insurer to withdraw from a market?
  9:58am
Kurt:

Is $800/mo for a $10K deductible plan affordable? It was $400 3 years ago. Where is the affordable in ACA?
  9:58am
g:

@Trouble: sum the compensation of every health insurance CEO and compare that number to the 18% of GDP spent on healthcare.
  10:00am
Terry NB:

You look at the rising costs of medications (this past year there have been several medications of questionable effectiveness approved at a cost of $500K to $1M/year). Hospital costs keep rising and now average $5K to more than $10K/day (why not just stay at Trump Tower - cheaper BOB:Y).
ACA caps insurance overhead at 15% - several insurers were much higher previously.

Health Care is reportedly fully 1/6th of the total U.S. Economy. Obama wasn't gonna get all he wanted from *that* Big Money cartel (Insurance, Big Pharma). Watch PBS's 'Frontline' called 'Obama's Deal' to see what went down : www.pbs.org...
Every other Developed Nation has figured out that a.) Health Care is expensive, & b.) Everyone will need it! The great USA is the global lagwagon here - as we increasingly are in most critical issues...
...& it was RomneyCare in Mass. first anyhow - so it *was* RepubliCare, in fact...Can you say 'obstruction' ?...People have tried to get something - anything done on this since I think Teddy Roosevelt fergawdsake...If Human Beings don't see Health Care as a Right, but only a moneyed Privilege - then take your Capitalism @ All Costs & shove it where the cancer grows. The Gingrich-Karl Rove 'Republican Revolution' was a major turning point in ending functioning cooperative bipartisan government. The Dems tried to play along & deal w/ the NeoCons & became NeoLiberals. There is no 'Left' & there is no 'Center' in U.S. politics. There is increasingly only Up & Down : as George Carlin said - it's a small club - & we ain't in it. @g: Scarcity isn't the issue as such - paying for Health Care is. Free Enterprise is great for some things - but not for others. When 1/10th of 1% own more than the rest of us combined - we can only speak of a 'Free Market' if engaging in Orwellian doublespeak. Criticizing struggling individuals who are trying to understand & articulate the societal collapse around them is victim blaming - relying on the American Dream of the New World pioneers & rugged individualism that expired before Teddy Roosevelt busted the railroad barons - @ least since the post-war prosperity faltered under too many right-wing assaults by the greedheads.
...That's good AndrewW!...We matter, I think. Tea sounds good.
@g: Money doesn't automatically equal efficiency - that's true. I think a more fundamenta; issue is that they're trying to sell us the nightmare that isn't enuff wealth & it's our fault somehow. That - is a lie.

it's funny- hearing that Jesus Christ Superstar song... it really sounds like a Belle & Sebastian melody that would've been on Dear Catastrophe Waitress or something. I feel like it must have been an influence! FASCINATING!!! also great show ILYSM Trouble!
